Chapter 41

Cal POV

It's been a month so far and I've talked to mare about ten times, its nice to hear her voice. Right now I'm in a meeting with officers and I'm talking about how a king will normally place his rooms and fortify their castle. The new girl well she's not new anymore but her name is Sam, she's really nice. We have great conversation and I've started to help her with her hand to hand combat. She's a red, no powers so she really needs to know this stuff, her shooting is amazing which was one of the reasons she was promoted. Once the meeting is over her and I start to talk but we're interrupted by Farley "hey what's up?" I ask her "Sam could you get me the file for the mission Mare Barrow went on?" She says "um... ya sure" she says and leaves. Once she's gone Farley closes the door so it's just us "is something wrong with Mare?" I ask and she sighs "no but what the hell have you been doing!" She yells and it takes me off guard "what?" I ask "are you really that naive that you can't tell when someone is flirting with you?"she says and I still have no idea what is happening "what?" I say again and she hits her face on the desk and then looks up at me "SAM IS FLIRTING WITH YOU!!!" She says and I laugh "no she's not" I say and she gives me the same look Mare does that says "are you an idiot or something". Then Sam knocks on the door and Farley grabs the file from her "thank you" she says "no problem hey Cal were still on for tomorrow right?" She asks "ya" I say the Farley slams the door shut "open your eyes Cal, you had girls always fawning over you when you where a prince. she just confirmed that you two for doing I don't know what tomorrow but it doesn't matter because she's trying to seduce you, she used your name not your rank and is always touching your arm" she says "look I know when someone is trying to go after me it's happened before even when I was with Mare but everyone knows we're together there's no way she would go after me if she knew" I say and Farley huffs "still you should clarify that you're not interested is her or anyone other than Mare" she says "of course" I say "alright we have a update from Mares team, that's why I asked for this file so lets get ready" she says.

Mare POV

After our talk with Garret we were trying to figure out why they wanted us to believe he was killing people and why he wasn't. Then, more people started getting killed by flame, but I could tell It wasn't Maven, it was too sloppy to be his work, when he did something he did it well. And we managed to find silver elite operatives but when we capture them or question them they kill themselves. But finally after about six tries we got one! He put up a fight and almost got the pill in his mouth but Jack teleported to him in time to stop him from putting it in his mouth and now we can get more information on the Maven thing but we have an update due so me, Eve and Suzy are in a room getting ready. Right now Suzy is setting up the communicator "you nervous?" Eve asks "No, why?" I ask "your talking to Cal for the first time in a month and you're going to tell him that his brother is confirmed to be alive" she says and then the nerves hit, yes I've talked to Cal but I said I would never say anything about the mission I just wanted to know how the kids were doing "oh ya..." I say and Eve pats my back "It'll be fine" she says and I nod "ok it's ready when your are" Suzy says so Eve and I get close to the mic "ok transmitting" she says and a light goes on "hello?" I hear Farley say "hi ya we're here" I say "Mare is that you?" Cal asks and I laugh "yes its me" I say "me too" Eve says breaking the awkwardness and I laugh "well whats the news?" Farley asks "we made contact with an old friend of mine who had some information on the silver elite and Maven" I say "he brought to our attention the death toll in this city is increasing from the silver elite killing reds and new bloods randomly. But the strange thing is, when they were found some of them where killed and covered with burn marks" I say and take in a deep breath "they have an M burned on them as well" I say "But they aren't him, they're too sloppy to be" I say "how can you be sure?" Farley asks "well we found out from my friend that Maven was at one of his auctions and bought flame makers, we tried to find the runner that went home with him but we had no luck, we did however find members of the silver elite but they killed themselves before we could ask any questions" I say but me and Eve smile "except for one " she says "WHAT!" Farley says and we laugh "we where about to integrate him but we had to give you a report or our window would close for the communication, there's a huge storm coming and it would have interfered with the signal" Eve says "well this has been a very successful month and when you interrogate that man give us a report as soon as you can" Farley say "yes ma'am " I say "transmissions over" Suzy says and Eve an I get up and head to the room where we kept him, he has silent stone manacles on so he can't use his ability, he's a strong-arm so its funny to watch him think he can break something but fail miserably. Peter stands outside the door looking at the camera feed from a screen to make sure the silver's not trying to escape "how's he doing?" I ask and he shrugs "he's fine" he says and I laugh "alright who wants to start?" I ask and Eve and we look at each other "both?" she says and I nod. We both walk in and he looks up at us and grimaces "hello traitor." He says to Eve "Red Rat" he says and I laugh "Can't you guys find a new one, that ones old why not Red scum" I say and Eve laughs "anyways we have some questions for you if you don't mind" Eve says and sits down at the table and I follow "why would I answer your questions?" He says "cuz you have nothing better to do" I say "what where you doing in a rush downtown?" I ask but he says nothing "ok... are there anymore of you here?" I ask and still no answer "alright let's start easier whats your name?" Eve asks and still no answer I lean over to Eve and whisper something in her ear she laughs and nods "alright well since your so inclined to keep your mouth shut why don't we make this harder" I say and pull his chair out, he has his arms tied to the side of the chair and his feet tied to the legs of the chair. I put my hands on his abdomen "do you have kids?" I ask and I feel him get tighter and take in a small breath "i'll take that as a yes, which means you have a wife" I say "what are you going to do" he asks and I laugh "oh nothing that will kill, but do you remember when your wife had your kids how much pain she was in, well if you don't tell us why you were downtown you'll feel a pain similar to that but a bit worse" I say and he laughs "what? you don't thinks it'll be that bad?" I say and he scoffs I look at Eve and she nods so I send waves of pain into his abdomen and he looks calm for a while then he lets out a breath he was holding in and his face starts to turn red "oh what? Did it hurt more than you thought?" Eve says "why are you here" she asks and he stays silent. Its been a few minutes and I've been giving him little breaks every now and then but during those breaks Eve squeezes chains around him "ok well since you want to stay quiet lets change the question" I say and Eve squeezes him tighter "Maven Calore" I say "what about him?" He asks and I huff "why are people trying to replicate his brand?" I ask and he laughs "you could tell it wasn't him huh" he says finally some answers "of course, so why?" I say "well you probably know his body went missing, we took it. He wasn't dead, he was going to be killed but we got to him first" he says, why is he saying so much? "Yes we do" I say and Eve squeezes tighter "well he was refusing to help us and just wanted to be left alone, but we had other plans. We kept him in a cell and would treat him quite well, we were trying to figure out how to make him work for us but because he was so broken mentally the only thing we could do was work with what we had" he says this and I try and figure what would have been left "we got a whisper and they, I guess, enhanced what was there making him want to work with us" what would have been left in his head? "But he wanted something before he helped us" and he looks at me "when was the last time he was seen in the Lakelands?" He asks "2 weeks ago" I say trying to figure out what is happening "and now for you miss Evangeline, how long by foot would it take for someone to get to Montfort from here?" He asks and her eyes go wide "2 weeks" she whispers then it hits me. The only thing left in Maven's head was love. His psychopathic love for me. "When we found out the little lightning girl and the traitor prince where having a baby we used it as fuel for the fire. For years he's been stuck in a cell watching the woman he loves create a life with his awful brother, and finally he is able to do something about it. He's going with the intent to kill, and should be arriving in the next hour or so" he says. It all makes sense now "you where a lure, a distraction" I say and run out of the room.
