Lily Anderson POV
Stepping out of my room on the way to the kitchen to grab a glass of water, I couldn't help but smile thinking about how hard Liam had been sleeping when I climbed out of bed. Sure, we had definitely worn each other out this evening, but he usually at least stirred when I moved around. My husbands had become so in tune with me over the years that I could barely breathe without them showing some sort of reaction. It was adorable most of the time, when they weren't being overprotective idiots. Regardless though, typically Liam would have at least opened an eye to see what I was doing when I moved around. He must have been more drained from his last mission than he had let on. We had made love twice, but that wasn't unusual for us. Liam, well, he had a lot of energy to burn most of the time.
Chuckling to myself and remembering the feel of his hands riding up my shirt, I was slightly startled to hear voices coming from the library. The only people that should be home this evening were myself, Liam, and Henry. Since Liam was basically unconscious in my bed, that meant that Henry was entertaining guests. Or talking to himself, but that was only likely if he was drunk. I hoped that wasn't the case. I slowly and quietly changed direction and let myself into my office. Closing the door softly behind me, I sat behind the computer monitors and pulled up the library cameras and audio. I was totally going to eavesdrop and didn't even feel bad about it.
There were two boys sitting on the sofa in front of the fireplace, while Henry was lounging across from them. Henry looked relaxed, but the set of his shoulders and the slight bounce of his knee told me he was a bit anxious. I recognized Owen Blackbourne immediately, and assumed the other young man was one of his brothers. I probably knew more about Owen then most of the members of his academy family. Maybe even more than his best friend and co-leader Dr. Sean Green. As one of the highest ranking Academy therapists, I was responsible for vetting and keeping tabs on all Academy group leaders. A fact they probably were not aware of.
Owen was one of the most impressive young men the Academy had ever seen, and his teammates were not that far behind him. The Blackbourne team was well known and well respected all across the Academy. I had no doubt the Blackbourne team had the ability to change the world if they decided to do so. After all, Owen and Sean had already changed the face of Charleston by time they were 11. Yes, they were impressive and accomplished young men, but they were also very emotionally damaged. Especially Owen. He had intense abandonment issues which prevented him from letting people in fully, as well as the borderline obsessive need to be in control at all times. Simply put, he was a powder keg waiting to explode. What the hell were they doing in my house in the middle of the night?
"Which one of you loves her?" Is the first thing I heard as audio kicked in. Well hell, this was about a bird. Fantastic. Yet another team was going to try and add a bird, and of course Henry was going to try and help them do it. Why he continued to bother, I had no idea. Our situation was not common, and not replicable. It only worked for us because it just happened. We had little to no control over it.
"What the hell does it matter?" The boy that was not Owen asked. Well, he growled actually. Here we go.
"I want to know which one is going to try to hit me. It's you, isn't it?" Henry answered the boy. He was enjoying this too much my for my liking. If this is what I thought is was, what these boys were going through was not funny. It was painful, or at least it probably would be.
"Mr. Anderson," Owen said. "Please?" His tone was arguably polite, but still made me chuckle.
Henry frowned then. He was going to have to start talking now and he always had a hard time explaining our situation. It wasn't that he was ashamed, he just didn't like giving people the chance to judge us for our choices. Particularly me. How was he going to start this time? After taking a deep breathe and nodding toward the mantle he said "See that?"
