Victor POV:
Decan: Hey Morgan, we will be there in about 10 minutes. But, dude, I'm gonna level with you. This party is gonna be a shit show. Do not push her. She will push back, hard.
Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath to try and calm my nerves. As much as I hated it, I was so glad Sang had Decan right now. I still had no idea what happened last night at her meeting, or even this morning with Mr. Hendricks, but I knew she was no where close to okay. She had been cracking, little by little for days, and I knew it was just a matter of time before she completely broke. Based on what we heard from Nathan this morning, she had a complete breakdown last night, but has yet to really talk to anyone about anything of importance.
The surprise I felt when she joined us for lunch today was strong. Other than the brief and adorable conversation she had with Luke and Silas, she acted like nothing was going on. It was a nice change after the past few days, but it was also all a lie. She was just bidding her time. Waiting until she felt she had a moment to really deal with everything that was happening. I just hoped she could make it one more night.
We really should have cancelled this party days ago. Decan was right, it was a terrible idea. Opening my eyes, I typed a quick reply to Decan and put my phone back in my pocket.
"Hey guys, they are gonna be here in 10 minutes". Everyone stilled their conversations and looked over to me. Luke and Gabe were over by the door still hanging streamers, whispering excitedly like the toddlers they were. North and Silas were behind the counter, putting out all the food in a buffet line. North looked exhausted, and Silas just looked wary. Kota and Nathan were sitting on the floor by the tables, playing with Max. They were barely looking at each other, let alone speaking, but I guess that was better then glaring. Kota had apologized to everyone after he stormed out in the middle of lunch, but Nathan and I hadn't acknowledged it yet. The three of us had to sit down and have a very serious conversation soon, because I was about to murder Kota, and honestly, I think Nathan needed a good smack too.
Mr. B and Sean were sitting off in the booth in the farthest corner, chatting quietly to themselves. They had gone straight to the corner the minute they got here and hadn't stopped whisperings for a single second. Uncle was in the in the kitchen finishing up the desserts that North had spent the whole day making to surprise Sang. Uncle had been eyeing us all since we walked in. He could definitely tell things were not normal.
Just as I was about to tell them the rest of what Decan told me, the front door opened with gusto as Karen, Mike, Jer, Derrik and Wil walked in. Karen looked like she was walking into her own surprise birthday party, smirking like it was the best day of her life. Mike was watching her with a bemused smile. It was clear something was going on there. Jer was texting on his phone, barely even looking up to see where he was. Derrik was looking around, looking for someone specific. It was obvious when he realized that person wasn't here, because he frowned and crossed his arms. Wil looked nervous, as if he was unsure if he should really be here.
Gulping I shot a look over to Sean and Mr. B. Sean looked unsurprised but the glimmer that was usually in his eye was dulled and his lips were pressed together in a flat line. Mr. B's eyes widened before he blanked out his face. I guess he hadn't thought they might show up, and no one had mentioned to him that it might be a possibility.
"Look alive everyone! She will be here any minute," Karen squealed, clapping her hands together in excitement.
"Karen, shut the fuck up. We know. You are not throwing this fucking party, we are. Go sit down or something" Gabe whinned.
"Mr. Coleman! Language!" Mr. B. stood up from his seat and began straightening out his shirt as he began walking toward the new group. For once, he was not wearing a suit. Sean and Gabe had somehow convinced him to wear 'normal clothes for a 19 year old'. Well, Mr. B.'s version, not Sean or Gabe's. He was wearing a pair of pressed khakis with a maroon polo shirt. Finished off with a pair of high end loafers and a Rolex. Rolling my eyes, I leaned back against the closest booth back. This should be...interesting.
"Miss Newman, how lovely it is to see you. Unfortunately the diner is closed for a private event today...". The moment Mr. B opened his mouth, Karen's grin turned animal. She was expecting this on some level, and she was ready. Sean's head dropped as he let out an exaggerated groan, and I just marveled at the idiocy that was our leader. Apparently love made people blind to many many things. Like common sense. And context clues. Before Mr. B. could continue, Karen cut him off.
"Oh I am very aware Mr. Polo. It's not every day the salacious Sang Sorenson turns 16! I wouldn't have missed this for the world. It's a good thing we all lead such very boring lives," she said while gesturing to her entire entourage, "or we might have had to. Seems our invites got lost, and we only found out about this little party this morning. Wouldn't that have been such a shame? What would poor Sang have thought, if so many of her dear friends hadn't been at her sweet 16?" Karen was batting her wide doe eyes, with the smile of an angel as she held Mr. B.'s gaze.
Everyone in the room aside from Mr. B., Kota, and Uncle...who had just walked through the kitchen door...was trying to stop themselves from laughing. Karen was a character, and she apparently had absolutely no fear. Kota was gaping, pinging his eyes back and forth between Karen and Mr. B., waiting for Mr. B to respond. A very tense moment of silent strangled laughter passed as Mr. B. took in his current opponent. I had seen his body stiffen when she called him Mr. Polo, and I could not decide if I was terrified for her life, or highly amused at her genius.
"My apologies, Miss Newman. You are correct. We are very fortunate that you all were able to make it. I do however have to ask," but before he could finish, she cut him off again.
"Don't worry Mr. Polo, you and Dr. Emerald are safe. Every pretty girl has a few older guy friends no one needs to know about," she faux whispered with an obnoxious wink. Gabe, Luke, Sean, Silas, Nathan, Mike, and Derek lost it. Mr. B just squeezed his lips together as his eyes froze over.
"Thank you Miss... Karen." Mr. B. took a deep breath and flattened his shirt. "Dr. Emerald and I appreciate it," he said, sounding like he was grounding rocks between his teeth.
I was completely blown away by what I was witnessing right now. I had no words. But apparently... Gabe did.
"2 points Newman, 0 points Polo!" He laughed, clutching his stomach with tears dripping down his face. Karen's eyes glittered as she held up two fingers to Mr. B and mouthed the word two. At that Sean fell against his booth, struggling to breath he was laughing so hard.
Before Mr. B. could respond, I heard the giggle of my favorite person in the world.
"Dr. Sean, what is so funny?"
