Song for the Chapter:
‘Cross My Heart – The Rocket Summer
. . .
ANALISE’S POV
My phone buzzed beside me as I looked up from my second page of writing. I didn’t even know if this had a purpose, but it felt good – I was able to let everything out. Every unspoekn word and every thought, thought.
‘Meet me down at the beach! It’s a surprise – Cam’
Picking up the cards of paper, I tappd them lightly aginst the desk, straightening them out before hiding them beneath the unworn clothes in my luggage bag.
Fixing myself up, I tidied up my hair, and starightened out my clothing hastily before I was satisfied, slamming the door shut to go on a date I was no longer sure I even wanted to go on.
. . .
“Hey!” He greeted me excitedly as he walked up to me and gave me a hug. Looking around, I saw along the beachside they had set up some sort of fair or carnival with stalls and several rides.
“Hey!” I beamed, trying to sound excited. I just didn’t want to put him down you know? He was so good to me. Here I was, going to break another guys heart when all they had done was be so kind and caring for me. He was a true friend, and he would stay that way.
“Ana!” I head several voices call out simotaneously as I saw my brother and the guys running up to us, barefoot and kicking sand behind them as they dashed forward.
“Nash? What a-”
“Oh yeah, your brother kind of wanted to um… chaperone?” Cameron whispered quietly in my hair as Nash eyed us out carefully.
“Hell yeah I’m going to chaperone – because frankly, this is illegal.” He joked, the musical laughter falling from each boys lips as Nash held out his index finger in a scolding manner at me, the sixteen year old who was treated as if I were five, and Cam, the nineteen year old that acted as if he were five.
“Come on.” Cam slightly chuckled, taking my hand in his as he led us away from the boys, towards the stalls.
. . .
Coming up from behind, I felt Cameron smile as he saw me looking at the item laying so carefully decorated on the table of their stall.
“Hey, try this on for me.” Cameorn suggested, picking up the exact bracelet I was eyeing out – the thin, light rose gold chain dangling as Cameron held it between his finges, admirig it, before attacking the clasps so it sat on my wrist; the small moon charm daging in the wind.
“It’s so pretty.” I mumbled as I swayed my wrist, watching the simply cresent moon charm refelect lightly onto Cameron’s shirt.
“Here you go.” Cameron quickly said as he passed the woman behind the stall a $10 note with a small smile.
“What?! I could’ve bought it – what if I didn’t even like it?” I exclaimed, hitting his chest softly.
“You liked it.” He replied with a smirk, as he took hold of my hand yet again, this time intertwining our fingers tightly.
“Hey let’s go up there – I really want to just hang out and talk to you for a sec.” Cameron lurted out nervously, leading me over to the nearby empty sand dune.
“Sure, o-okay.”
Sitting down beside him, we watched as the waves crashed against each other, the white foams bubbling at the shore until Cameron finally cleared his throat in an awkward, muffled cough.
“So what is it you wanted to talk about exactly?” I asked, spotting Matthew in the corner of my eye as he stood alone, glancing back at Cameron and I occassionally.
“Oh- yeah okay.” He stuttered to himself before taking a deep breath and looking over to me. “I really like spending time with you.” He whispered, his cheeks beginning to flush as he pulled me cose under his arm, looking down at me as I smiled, trying not to squirm out of his touch.
This all just didn’t seem to feel right. And it couldn’t of occurred to me at the worst time.
“Me too.” I muttered, making him smile. I hope he knew it was actually just as a friend, despite the mixture of feelings that bubbled within me previously.
That letter – I know it sounded so stupid, but everything just became so clear. I realised what I wanted, and what I didn’t. I built this wall of fear that blocked me from making any decision. But now, I think I finally figured out what’s going on in my own head.
“Um so… I don’t usually do this on second dates.” He bgean, scratching the nape of his neck sheepishly. “Yet again, I don’t kiss people in an elevator either, but I’ve just really lovd the time I’ve gotten to spend with you – from hangin gout, and sharing a room, from going out on dates. It’s all been so great, and wha can I say? I just really hope it can continue…” Cameron explained softly with a sweet smile.
Oh my gosh.
‘No. No. No.’ I muttered to myself, wishing that this wasn’t going where I thought it was headed.
“Anyways, Analise – I was just wondering if you would be my girlfriend?” He asked, looking down at me, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Taking a deep breath, I loooked at him in shock trying to process what I would say.
“I-uh Cameron, I’m so sorry I just… I can’t do this right now.” I blurted out all at once as I stood up and ran across the beach, back to the direction of the hotel for the blonde boy.
Holding in the tears that were on edge, I looked around, turning 360 before spotting him walking back to the hotel by himself.
“Matt!” I called out as I ran, my breathing growing staggered and heavy as he finally turned around, pulling his hands out of the pockets of his jeans to take the headphone out of his ear.
“Matthew I really need to tal-”
“Lise I can’t do this. I can’t go through watching you with hi-”
Ignoring him, I let my senses take over, completely ignoring every single voice in my head.
Look up to him, I stood slightly on my tippy toes, looking straight up into his eyes before I leaned in, softly planting my lips on his, watching as his eyes fluttered closed and his fingers danced down my arms, his touch barely felt until he wrapped his arms lightly around my waist in warm embrace.
“You’re the one for me – I’m sorry for taking so long… but I just… i-it’s you Matt.” I whispere, not seeming to have the wors to explain this all as he pressed his forehead against mine, feeling his rapid breathing across my face.
“Please don’t tell me this is just you messing with me, because I don’t think I can take it after this.” He whispered, suddenly letting go of me with a saddened expression.
Taking hold of his hand, I lightly wrapped it in mine, squeezing tightly.
“How about we try us as an… us?” I asked, earning a small, wide eyed nod from Matthew as the smile on his face slowly.
