'Beating Heart' - Ellie Goulding

MATTHEW’S POV
I nodded without realising what she just said – every moment of this was so surreal. She was what I wanted, and all of a sudden here she was running to me out of the blue.
I glanced down at our hands that were interlocked as she stood there, her eyes glistening with excitement, and all I could do was stare. None of this made sense.
“C-can I ask one question?” I whispered, watching her face intently as she slowly nodded. “Why now?”
“What do you m-”
“I mean why is this happening now? Why didn’t it happen earlier?” I asked, biting on the inside of my cheek anxiously as I awaited her response, hoping that it wasn’t what my conscience was telling me.
“I know that what I said couldn’t of swayed you any which way and -” I froze, watching as her eyes fell to the floor. “It was him wasn’t it?” I muttered through clenched jaw.
“He asked me to be his gi-” She mumbled, her head hung low. Lifting my hand, I cupped my hand on her cheek, rising her face to meet mine.
“He asked me to be his girlfriend.” She repeated as the sickening feeling returned to my stomach.
“And?” I questioned impatiently. I knew exactly where this was headed.
“I just didn’t think that we-”
“That you’d work out? So here you are conveniently running back to me because you want to be with me?” I continued, dropping my hand from her face as I ran it through my hair, brushing the messy strands back. “Or because you’re running from your problems?”
“I told you why I’m here. I told you that I want to be with you. Why is this all so ha-” She asked, clutching my wrist before I was able to walk away.
“I thought th-”
“You thought wrong. And apparenty so did I -”
“Why are you acting like this?”
“Nobody wants to be anyone’s second choice, Lise. Face it, your only here because you know that you can come running to me when something goes wrong with Cameron.” I explained, trying to supress the tears, as I looked down at her with blurry vision.
“This isn’t wh-”
“This- This is something we just can’t do to each other anymore.” I muttered.
“We, or you?” She fought back, her arms flailing in the air as Cameron came into the picture, standing not far off as he searched the crowd.
“Sorry.” Holding her shoulders tightly in my grip, I whispered, my lips lightly grazing over her forehead before I turned and let the tears finally fall, gladly being the one to walk away this time as I couldn’t stand watching her leave me yet again.
I sped through the busy life of the gathering people who had come to attend the fair; pushing through severeal to get away because frankly, anywhere seemed better than here.
ANALISE’S POV
“Ana!” A voice called out before a hand reached out, grabbing mine. Spinning around, I was faced with a panting Cameron.
“What just-”
“I can’t do this Cameron. My mind is telling me to be with you, and my brother thinks that you’re the only one for me but for once, how come I can’t make my own decision – it’s my life!” I exclaimed, pulling my hand away from his as his face dropped.
“Cam I’m sorry I just…” I stopped in my tracks, not seeming to find the words to explain this. I didn’t think there really were any to make up for what I had just done.
“I can give you so much more than him! What don’t you realise? All he’s done is be a jerk to you while I’ve been there to comfort you and take you out and spend time with you because I like you for you, not because you look like my ex!”
“What?” I croaked, praying that it wasn’t true.
“It’s true and he knows it.” Cameron muttered as he approached me, his hand resting on my cheek exactly where Matt’s sat a few minutes ago.
“Cameron, don’t get me wrong, you are one of the greatest guys I’ve met, and that’s why you’re one of my closest friends, okay? A real friend wouldn’t-”
“Go after him.”
“What?”
“You’re right – I don’t want to have to be the guy that kept you from being happy. I just need you to know that I am right here, and I’ll be waiting. I know a part of you still holds feelings for m-”
“Camero-”
“Don’t deny it.” He whispered, picking up my hand from my side, placing it against my chest. “I feel the way you look at me, the way your heartbeat speeds up and you get all jittery - I know you Analise.”
“Cameron – we’re friends. You’re my best friend; nothing more, nothing less.” I explained, dropping his grip from mine.
“Right... friends.” He smiled sheepishly, the look of disappointment clear on his face as I turned around, to search for Matthew.
