the next night
shawn mendes >>>

My heart started beating a lot quicker the moment I saw her. There she is.

She noticed me quickly. She broke into a huge grin and walked a little faster until she was standing right in front of me.

"You said you couldn't make it!" she exclaimed, playfully shoving me. I shrugged, taking her bag from her and putting it in the trunk of the car. She lowered my sunglasses enough to see my eyes, making her grin.

"I lied, Gemma Clark. Sue me," I replied, and without a single moment of hesitation, she kissed me. Even though people could be looking at us, she just wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me like she never had. It felt like a first kiss.

There was a bit of laughter in her voice, and I laughed a little as she quickly wrapped her arms around me. I did the same to her, holding her close to me. It has only been a couple days but jeez, it was long enough. I missed her like this. I missed just being close to her.

"I missed you," she said softly.

I pulled away from her while we still had our arms around each other so I could see her face. "I missed you, too. Wanna get out of here?" I asked her, and she nodded.

"I want nothing more."

It was always a little weird when we were reunited, after any amount of time. It's like, I'm very thrilled that she's back and I think she's very thrilled to be back and there's so much to say but it's almost hard to start again. We usually fell back into it pretty quickly, though.

"I can't believe you actually came," she said, smiling and shaking her head. "You liar."

I was satisfied with this reaction. I got her.

"You look good for being on a plane for six hours," I told her. She groaned.

"Honestly, I hate flying. I think I'd rather just drive all the way to New York than sit on a dumb plane for six hours."

"Gem, driving would take you like, five times the time it takes to fly. Probably longer than that."

"Yeah, but I wouldn't have to deal with anyone else. That'd be worth it."

I shook my head. "That's just stupid."

She sighed. "I know. There's no good way to do it, really."

"Nope. There's not."

She talked non-stop pretty much the whole way home. I thought it was sweet; she's usually pretty quiet and is more of a look-out-the-window kind of girl. But she was so excited about this whole thing, and I was just thrilled to see her so passionate about something.

When we got back to her apartment, she leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes for a second, taking in a long breath. She's incredibly beautiful, I just remembered.

"Home," she said softly. "My bed."

"You're so close," I told her with a smile.
