"You'll never believe what happened tonight," Edith said.

I felt a knot form in my stomach. That could be good or bad. I don't like that uncertainty.

"What?" I asked.

"Okay, so Brad, Connor, and Shawn were at some party tonight, and I guess they were just like, talking to each other and hanging out, right?" she started.

A Shawn story. I should have known.

"Right," I said. I have no clue where this could possibly be going.

"Okay, so then apparently Shawn like, saw some guy across the room and swore that he knew him from something, but Brad and Connor didn't recognize him," she kept explaining. "And it finally hit him. Do you know who it was?"

"I don't even have a guess."

"It was Alex Donovan," she said.

My stomach turned. His name makes me queasy. I don't like the fact that he just lives his life. He's just walking around, and no one knows what he did to me. What he was going to do to me.

Don't think about it.

"Wow," I said. "That's crazy." I couldn't sound too excited, because I wasn't. I hate that name.

That story wasn't very exciting. It was actually quite bad. I don't like the fact that he's at parties.

"That's not the end!" she said. "What a horrible story that would be."

Oh, okay. This still has potential.

"Okay, so Shawn saw him, and he realized who he was," she started again. "And then apparently he just said I'll be right back or something like that to Brad and Connor, and then got up."

Did he like, confront Alex? Because of me?

"Yeah?" I asked. I am now deeply interested. "Did he say something to him or something?"

"Gemma," she said. "He punched him in the face."

What?

What?

"I'm sorry, what?" I asked.

I had to have heard her wrong.

"Shawn punched Alex Donovan in his face at a party," she said slowly. "I'm not even messing with you."

I didn't even know what to think.

"Why...why would he...why did he do that?" I asked, sounding as confused as I feel.

"Because Alex drugged you and was planning on doing worse! What do you mean 'why did he do that?"

I guess that's a good point.

And just like that, I fell in love with Shawn a little more. No one has ever punched someone in the face to defend my honor before. That stuff only happens in movies. And now a boy—the boy who saved me from this uncertain trauma in the first place—did it for me.
