"Don't make me wait, Dempsey."
Jake pressed his lips to mine quickly before holding a finger up, promising one second.
"Give me a sec. Then I'm all yours," he told me with a smile, then he hurried back inside to the party to talk to someone important about something important, leaving me sitting in the car alone.
A moment or two later, there was a knock on the window of the car. I looked up to see a guy I don't think I've ever seen before. He was normal-looking; he didn't look like a serial killer or anything. Cute, one might even call him. He was grinning at me, as if we had known each other for forever.
What do I do? He could kill me.
But, I ignored that rational part of my brain and rolled the window down anyways.
"Can I help you?" I asked as politely as possible, with a hint of what the fuck do you want in there.
He laughed a little, and I decided I liked his smile.
"Sorry. This is weird, I'm just now realizing," he said, scratching the back of his neck. His voice. It was familiar. And his eyes, and...
"Alex? Alex Donovan?" I asked. My ex-boyfriend. My boring, meaningless, ex-boyfriend who dumped me a month before my mom died. The only other boyfriend I've had besides Jake.
