The doctor finally stepped out into the waiting area.

"She's stable, everyone."

A collective sigh filled the room. Kelly and Terry whispered a prayer, and Izzy immediately asked about the baby.

"The baby is just fine," the doctor said, calm and reassuring. "And the mother too. We just want to keep her under observation to rule out any brain trauma."

"Thank God," Tia whispered. "Can we see her?"

"Of course."

We all made our way in to see Kim. A little later, Ki and Brandy showed up. I let them know what was going on as soon as they called.

"Hey, sissy, you okay?" Tia asked softly.

"I'm fine, Tia," Kim replied.

"Do you remember what happened?" I asked.

"Yeah. I wasn't even going fast," she started. "Then this car, driving on the wrong side, came straight at me. I tried to swerve, but they followed every move I made. There was no way off the road. They hit me head-on. Just before I blacked out, I heard this woman say, 'This will teach you to have a baby by my man.' That's all I remember."

Izzy punched the wall. I grabbed him before he lost control.

"I'm sorry, man. I swear to God I'ma kill that bitch. I know it's my ex."

"That bitch is crazy," Tia said. "I'm so glad you're okay, baby sis. I would've gone rogue if something happened to you."

Kim laughed a little. "I'm fine. I'm a fighter."

Tia and Kim's parents came in with food. We talked for a while before Tia and I finally headed home.

"Come here," I told Tia once we were home.

"Yes?"

"You good? Talk to me."

"I'm fine, baby. Just grateful she's okay."

"Same," I said, rolling a blunt. "Can't believe that shit."

"That bitch better pray I don't find her."

"Watch your mouth. But yeah, we on the same time."

We smoked and knocked out for the night.

I woke up the next morning with her hand in my pants like always. She turned in her sleep, and I tapped her gently.

"Gotta pee, mama."

"No, don't move," she mumbled.

I chuckled. "I gotta pee."

Once I handled my business and brushed my teeth, her phone started buzzing. Sean's name flashed across the screen. I picked up.

"What, bitch?"

"Man, put Tia on."

"She's occupied."

"Is that right?"

"Stop calling her."

I hung up.

"Tia, get your ass up."

She walked to the bathroom, groggy. "Yes, Dave?"

"Why that nigga number still saved?"

"Who?"

"Don't play dumb. Sean."

"I just never changed it. I'll delete it now. What's wrong?"

"He called. Checking for you."
