In the Sand

Cowboys gathered around the fire

Holding in their deepest desires

Silence filled the darkening sky

And the fire started to die

The wind began to howl

And the wolves started to growl

Footprints appeared in the soft sand

While cowboys surveyed the land

One cowboy said, "This reminds me of a tale

An old tale with a horse so pale"

The others chattered with joy

As the story was told by the boy

"Two figures stood still

Outlined against the grassy hill

A horse's neigh sounded

While she stomped and pounded

A whip's crack filled the sky

And the horse thundered by

A cowgirl sat atop the mare

Stroking her soft hair

They rode across the shadowed land

Leaving footprints in the sinking sand

Out of side they rode

To their humble abode

Sons and daughters came out to see

The horse and cowgirl filled with glee

But the only thing left in the silent land

Were the horse's footprints in the sand"

The cowboys clapped and cheered

But a horse's neigh reached their ears

Frightened they glanced at the sky

And heard a cowgirl's cry

The moon was high

And the time was nigh

The horse thundered by

Yet only shadows filled the sky

And every night around the fire

Footprints appeared in a sandy spire

And remained until the next day

Yet they were never here to stay
