With the River

The sun dips below the horizon

As a fog rolls over the river

Bringing whispers of change

To a little child's ears

Eyes so bright watch the water's surface

Waiting for movement

To shatter the reflection

Of her old self

Icy becomes the land

Around the still river

As night's breath kisses the child

But she does not move

For the water moves for her

It ripples and roars

Bubbles and foams

Reaching out to her with long fingers

Warmth floods her body

As the water sucks her in

It hugs her tight

And pulls her under

No cry escapes her cracked lips

As the river closes above her head

She takes a deep breath of water

And sinks to the sand

Far below the darkened sky

Waiting for someone

To care about her

The river hugs her tighter

And she kisses her wet friend

Good-bye

She whispers to the world

As she floats off with the river
