Chapter 36 • 2008

A few months later I stood all in black next to Danny outside the church. Tears were streaming down my face and my shoulders shook as I looked at the coffin that was being lowered into the ground. I never thought in a million years I would be saying goodbye to her.

After they took Danny to the hospital and Cody and Dani were together they told us the news. Lily wouldn't recover. It was up to us to turn off her life support. She'd lost too much blood and although they tried the wound was too bad to repair. Dani didn't understand at the time and of course neither did Lochlan. That conversation that Cody and I had to have with them in the hospital room minutes before we ended Lily's life was the hardest I'd ever had.

"Mummy's got to go now, kids." Cody whispered as Lochlan sat on the edge of his knees and Dani stood next to him with her hands in Lily's.

"Where's she going?" Dani asked, looking up at Cody with wide eyes.

"She's got to go to heaven. But she'll be okay there. She'll be all better and later on you'll get to see her again."

"When?" Dani asked again.

"Not for a while. But you will, I promise." Cody whispered, tears threatening to spill.

"But I don't want to say goodbye." Dani said.

"Neither do I. But we need to. Sometimes people have to leave for no reason. Sometimes they leave for a certain reason. But sometimes they just have to leave and we don't get a choice, we just have to accept it and say goodbye. Only for now though." Cody said before he kissed Lochlan and Dani on their heads and flicked the switch, stopping Lily's heart from beating. Dani kissed her on the hand before taking mine and saying, "Goodbye Mummy. For now." and I took Lochlan from Cody, leading them both out the room to leave Cody to be alone. As I sat on the chairs outside, Lochlan on my lap and holding Dani close to me, I could hear Cody's sobs through the door and saw him through the blinds, bent over Lily's body, now still and lifeless in the bed. I began to cry and I wished more than anything I had Danny beside me but he was still recovering. The doctors said he was fine and, although he suffered serious burns on his legs, he would make a full recovery with no more than some scars. A tear dropped off my face and onto my lap as I held the kids. The kids with no mother. Lily was gone. It would never be the same again.
