I can't believe River actually wants to go on this date with Trevor now. I wonder what changed. The same girl who 24 hours ago was so annoyed by him. It's so frustrating, I feel like I need to tell her that I want to throw my hat in the ring too. I need her to know that I feel something, but do I have the right to announce that now?

The ride home was quiet. River didn't say a word, she looked lost in thought. I'd give anything to know what was going on in that pretty little head of hers.
We pulled in to the driveway and got out of the truck. River thanked my dad for the ride and took off my jacket to give back to me.

"Thanks for letting me wear it."

"Yeah, Sure."

River started for her front door.
Say something idiot, tell her!

"Hey, River wait up."

"What's up?"

" What's the deal with you and Trevor, are you guys like a thing now?"

" Blaise I just met him yesterday, We aren't anything at the moment. Why?"

" It's just that, I don't think hes right for you."

" I thought you two were best friends. What's going on between you two? You've been kind of crotchety towards each other for the past two days. Are you guys always like that?"

"No not really. We just aren't seeing eye to eye right now."

"Why is that?"

" It's hard to explain." I said looking down at the ground.

"Okay. Well, it's getting late and I'm exhausted."

" Oh. Okay. yeah.. See ya."

River went inside and closed her door.
I am such a wuss. Ugh! Why can't I just tell her!?

Suddenly I heard the door open up and River stepped back out on to her porch.

" Blaise."

" Yeah?"

"I forgot to tell you, Sarah is up to something."

"What do you mean?"

" She wants to become my new bestie so she can get closer to you."

" Huh?"

"Basically she's offering to help me become popular if I let her hang out here and tag along places so that she can see you. I think she hopes that you will realize you made a mistake and take her back."

"Are you serious?"

"Yup. You won't though right? She's awful."

Wait, is she jealous?

"Thanks for telling me." I said smiling.

"Sure, No problem. Good night."

"Night."

Perfect. This is going to be a messy summer.

I didn't want to go inside just yet so I decided to go outback and sit by the fire pit. When I got to the back yard I see that my dad had the same idea.

"Everything okay?" He said looking up.

" Yes. No." I shrugged my shoulders.

"Wanna talk about it?"

"I just wanted a nice relaxing summer with the chance to get to know her, maybe spend a little time with her. Now i'm going to have to watch her with Trevor, and Sarah is on a mission to get back together. She actually offered to hang with River to make her popular by association just so she can see me."

"That girl is something else."

"Yeah, that she is."

Just then James came strolling into the back yard.

"Hey guys! Mind if I join?"

"Hey man. What are you doing here?"

"Wasn't tired, went for a walk and ended up here."

"Well pull up a chair. You guys hungry? I'll go get some hot dogs to roast like we did when you two were little guys."

"Awesome, I'm starving."

"Dude, you are always hungry." I said shaking my head.

"Truth."

"Okay then, I'll be right back." Dad said heading inside.

"So, did you tell her yet?"

" Tell who what?"

James sat back in his chair and smiled. "River. Have you told her that you like her?"

I gave James a confused look. How the hell does he know?

"Dude I've known you forever, it's pretty obvious that you don't want her with Trevor, which can only mean that you like her."

"Shit. If you picked up on it, that means that Trevor definitely has. Which would explain why he's being so extra, I was hoping that I was wrong."

"What are you going to do?"

"I mean, what can I do?"

"Honestly, I don't see what those two would even have in common. I give it a week before River gets tired of Trevor." James said smiling.

"Yeah but what if it goes the other way?"

"She doesn't strike me as the type who would put up with Trevor's shit. He will show his ass sooner or later."

"I guess, I just don't want her to get hurt in the process."

"Something tells me that River Can take care of herself."

Dad finally came back with the hot dogs.

" Okay! Who's ready to roast some weenies?!"

James and I both started laughing.

"Oh come on guys your in high school, the word weenie shouldn't be that funny anymore."

"Weenie is funny no matter how old you are Mr.C."

We spent the next hour talking about baseball, old times and girls. It was exactly the kind of night that I needed.
