I knew about a little abandoned beach that my dad and I had stumbled upon once when we were looking for a good fishing spot. It took us about an hour to get there since we were on foot but finally after making our way through some thick brush, we found the beach.

River took her shoes off and walked down to the water to put her feet in. She didn't seem to want to talk and I was trying to allow her some space to clear her head.

I sat down in the sand and watched her as she walked the shoreline, stopping every once in a while to pick up a shell. I can't imagine what was going on inside that pretty little head of hers.

After a while she came and sat down next to me, she hooked her arm through mine and rested her head on my shoulder. I kissed the top of her head, breathing in the scent of her coconut shampoo.

" Do you want to talk about it?"

" Not yet." She squeezed my arm a little tighter and I could feel her tears soaking my sleeve.

"Come here." I said, pulling her into my lap.

She buried her face in my chest and began to sob. I sat there stroking her hair allowing her to cry it out for as long as she needed. I felt her body relax and she finally looked at me for the first time since we left Trevor's house. Her beautiful blue eyes were bloodshot and puffy.

"Don't look at me, I'm a mess." She said turning her face away.

"But you're a beautiful mess."

She giggled and then let out a sigh. "I'm hungry."

"I think there is an ice cream shop up the street."

"I need real food."

"Let's take a walk and see what we can find you."

I stood up and held my hand out to help her up. Once she was up, she did't let go of my hand, instead she laced her finger with mine. I was a little shocked at first but part of me knew it was because she just needed to be close to someone and right now I was her only option.

We walked the beach until we spotted a road and we followed that until we came across a little sub shop. River sat down at a table while I ordered our subs.

While standing in line I checked my phone for the first time since leaving Trevor's house. He called me 14 times, my dad called twice and there were multiple text messages. I sent a quick text to my dad letting him know where we were and that we were okay. He responded with a thumbs up emoji.

After we ate River said that she wanted to go back to the beach for a little while longer. I called my dad and asked him to pick us up at 5. We walked around the little beach skipping rocks and collecting shells for a while. Until she was finally ready to talk.

"I don't know how to feel about him. God, what do I even call him? Spears... Nathan... Dad?"

"Definitely not Dad, he needs to earn that."

"When I just knew him as Spears I thought he was this great guy. Now that I know he's Nathan.... I just don't know how to feel."

"Care to hear an outsiders opinion?" I glanced at her.

"Yes please."

"I've known Spears for about 7 years. During that time I've only ever seen him be a great role model, a loyal friend and someone who would give a stranger the shirt off his back. I know he hurt your mom, but he's never hurt you. Please don't hate me for saying this,  but Trevor was right when he said that what happened in the past is between Savannah and Spears. Their issues should not affect your relationship with your.... With Spears."
