As I was darting through makeshift tents and trash, I finally spotted Ms. Sanchez ducking behind a wooden pillar just as Trevor caught up to me."River What the fuck?!" He yelled as he grabbed my arm. "Are you crazy?"
"Trevor she's here."
"Who?"
"Lennox's mom, Now let me go."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes!"
"Where?"
"She's over there." I said pointing in her direction.
"River Marie Weston, what the hell were you thinking coming down here by yourself?" My father yelled as he approached with Lennox. " Was I not clear on how dangerous it is for you down here?"
"Dad I had to. Lennox's mom is here. When she spotted Lennox she took off."
"What? Where?" Lennox began to look around. "Are you sure it was her?"
"Im positive. Ms. Sanchez, please come out. We only want to talk to you." I said trying to reassure her.
"Speak for yourself, I have no interest in talking. Trevor, do me a favor and go ask your mom for the papers they need my birth giver to sign."
"You sure you want to do this here?" my father eyed her.
"I'm positive. Grab a pen too, I doubt she has one."
Trevor looked to my dad for permission and when he got the head nod, he ran off to retrieve what Lennox had requested.
"Rosa, quit being a coward and come out." Lennox yelled. "We aren't here to take you home, I just need you to sign your rights over.. That's all. Then you can shove all the needles you want into your arm, just set me free first."
"Lennox!" I scolded. "That's a bit harsh don't you think?"
"Harsh? No River, it's not harsh. Harsh would be selling all of your child's belongings for drug money and then abandoning her, leaving her to fend for herself."
"I'm so sorry Mija." Ms. Sanchez said stepping out from her hiding spot.
"No you're not." Lennox said taking in her mother's disheveled appearance. " you look like shit by the way."
"Lennox." Dad said with a pleading tone.
She ignored him.
"So this is what is going to happen. Once my friend gets back with my papers, you are going to sign them... all of them, releasing me into the care of Savannah Weston and terminating your parental rights altogether."
"Mija...."
Lennox held her hand up in anger.
"Save it. Spare me your promises. If you wanted to get clean and be a mother you would have done it by now. If this is how you want to live your life then fine, but I deserve better. Savannah has taken better care of me these past few months then you ever have.
I deserve to be a kid and not have to worry about my things being sold or when my next meal will be. I shouldn't have to worry if I will have a home to come back to after school or if the electricity will be shut off or if I will find my mother dead of an overdose.
All I should have to worry about are my grades and not ending up out here like you. That is why you will sign the damn papers and let me have the life I deserve. You owe me that much."
"Ok." Ms. Sanchez sniffeld.
Trevor came back with Bianca who was holding a file folder and a notary stamp.
