When we pulled up to the house, my mom's car was already in the driveway and Lennox and Jose were sitting on the porch. Sometimes she leaves work early to avoid traffic on the days she has to pick Grayson up from daycare. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case today so I could gather my thoughts and figure out how to approach this conversation.
"Hey, where's mom?" I asked Lennox.
She smiled. "You said that like she's my mom too."
"Well she basically is." I laughed.
"Her and Grayson walked down the street to take Trevor's godfather a 'welcome to the neighborhood' bottle of wine."
"SHIT!"
I took off running down the street toward Spears' house, praying that I could get there before my mom got the shock of her life. Lennox called after me confused by my sudden panic. I heard Blaise say something to her but I was too far away to make out what it was.
When I turned the corner I could see my mom and Grayson on his front porch.
"MOM!" I ran up to the porch, trying to catch my breath.
"Hi Sissy!" Grayson came over and hugged my waist.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"What's it look like?" She said holding the bottle of wine up. "I don't think he's home though."
" Okay good. We need to go home.... Like right now."
"What's wrong River? Did you run the whole way here?"
"Can we just leave please? I will explain everything when we get home."
" Yeah, okay. Lets go." She said with a confused look.
Just as I was about to grab Grayson's hand I heard the deadbolt unlock from the inside.
The door opened a crack and a male voice said, "I'm sorry, I was out back I didn't hear the doorbe......"
Speared looked out and locked eyes with my mom.
"Nathan?!" She gasped dropping the bottle of wine and it immediately shattered on the ground.
I picked Grayson up to get him away from the broken glass.
" Vannah." Spears said stepping out of his house.
"What in the actual.."
"MOM! Grayson!" I cut her off before she got the word out.
She turned to me "What's going on?"
" Vannah, why don't you guys come in so we can talk." He said taking a step closer.
"No, I think we are fine right out here." She said crossing her arms.
" HI!" Grayson said waving to Spears.
"Hey there little buddy."
I heard heavy footsteps behind me and turned to see Lennox and Blaise running up.
"You guys okay?" She asked glaring at Spears.
"Lennox honey, can you please take Grayson home?"
"But mommy I want to see inside our favorite house!" Grayson pouted while wriggling out of my arms. I set him down on the porch away from the glass.
Mom leaned down to get eye level with him. " I know baby, maybe another day. Right now I need you to be a big boy and go Home with Lennox please."
"Come on Gray, I've been waiting for you to get home all day so we can play some baseball." Blaise said holding his hand out.
"You have!?"
