thank you chennie_1992 for requesting!

From every corner of the earth came the signs that the apocalypse was upon us. Famine and disease stalked every land and the death toll was in it's billions. It was being described as the end times in the few media outlets that still ran. The big cities became derelict shells and the surviving refuges sought shelter in the countryside, where they were shot on sight for fear that they brought the disease with them.

There were no more burials, the living would no longer approach a corpse, so they rotted right out in the open with their unseeing eyes staring at the unravelling civilisation until they would later on rise to feed. There was no more electricity as the workers for the plants had died and soon luxuries like running clean water and flushing toilets had ended with the breakdown in sanitation.

All the once green lands of the earth were no more than ash and charcoal. The air was heavy with the smell of burnt flesh and smoke hung in a haze that partially obscured the blood-red sun. The cities stood like skeletons, baren wastelands, empty now that disease had taken whatever the fire did not. Even the oceans stood still like semi-stagnant pools of death and decay, there were no waves as even the wind had left the earth. The skies were barren, no birds flew or sang.

And all the while the oppressive heat rained down like the breath of hell.

You sit yourself down, sighing heavily as you throw your head back against the trunk of a tree. You're beyond exhausted and while sleep should be the least of your worries, you can't help but yearn for a good fifteen minute nap.

There's a rustle from behind you, your eyes already half way closed. You don't even bother jumping into action, knowing exactly who it is and exactly why they're coming towards you.

"Wake up, lazy-ass. We have no time to be resting," Jeon Jungkook barks, hand instinctively reaching out to whack you on the back of the head. You groan in complaint, rubbing at the spot as you push yourself to stand.

"Must you always be a prick?" You ask, already sure that his answer will be 'yes' with his signature toothy grin. This time, he goes for charming you with his smirk, waiting until you're in front of him to keep walking.

"Y'know, you could just leave. I don't mind sending you off on your own."

You scowl to yourself, cursing him out under your breath. You met Jungkook accidentally, thinking his camp was an abandoned one. You caught your leg in his trip wire and were caught hanging upside down while he calmly approached you with a gun.

After a few explanations on your behalf, he had let you down, skilfully catching you in his arms to set you upright. He informed you that he had been searching for a while and you're the first person he's encountered. Fearfully, you admitted that to be the same for you. Since that day, he's always kept you by his side, saving your ass from countless situations to brag about later.

You wouldn't survive a day without him and it sucks to admit it.

How unfortunate for you that the one guy that can keep you safe and is—quite possibly—the only other human on this freaking planet hates you just as much as you hate him.

Suddenly, he stops, hand reaching out for yours to pull you behind him. You gulp fearfully, hand reaching for the gun in your pocket. Jungkook does the same with his free hand, jaw hardened as he tightens his hold on your hand.

"Slowly, and I mean slowly, press yourself against my back," he instructs in a whisper, his calculating gaze scanning the forest surrounding the two of you. You nod, already beginning to turn as quietly as possible, your breathing coming out in shallow pants. Jungkook does his best to silently calm you down, rubbing frantic circles on the skin of your hand,

Finally, the agonising wait is over, Jungkook's muscular back pressing into yours.

"Good girl," he praises. "Now when I say go, shoot south-west and don't stop for anyone but me."

Your heart pounds in your chest, hands trembling as you cock your gun and aim south-west. You can already spot figures moving sluggishly through the bush. Zombies.

"Go."

You start shooting, thankful for Jungkook's back being there to support you from the blows. He, too, fires but in a complete opposite direction.

It's a nest, you realise, and they've got us fucking surrounded.

Your shooting becomes more stable now, the grunts of pain from the zombies increasing on your side as you knock them down like bowling pins. A quick glance over at Jungkook has you gasping.

Sweat drips down the side of his face, his teeth bared in a growl as he mercilessly shoots every single zombie down in one go. You quickly look back to your side, cursing loudly at the advance the zombies have gained.

Distraction kills.

"Y/N, what's going on?" Jungkook yells above the noise, nudging your shoulder to get your attention.

"Got distracted. About fifteen headed towards us," you explain, hoping he doesn't get mad. He's silent for a few seconds before he pushes your shoulder down, forcing your body to go down with it.

Hand still on your shoulder, he raises his gun and shoots down your pursuers, not even flinching at the sounds.

"Are you okay?" He finally asks, crouching down in front of you after minutes of stunned silence pass. The fire that once burned deliciously in his eyes is now gone, replaced with the big, innocent orbs

"Yeah," You croak out, subconsciously leaning into his touch as he brushes a strand of hair away from your face.

"Do you wanna rest for a bit?" He offers, taking into consideration the shake in your hands and the fear in your eyes. You nod frantically but point away from the mass of zombie bodies. He understands what you mean and stands, holding his hand out for you.

He expects you to slap it away but you instead interlock your fingers with his, tugging him away from the mess.

You end up stopping at a clearing, collapsing onto the grass. Jungkook chuckles, spreading himself out a good distance away from you. You frown at the realisation, panicking a little at the distance.

If something were to happen, he'd be too far away.

So you run to him, plopping yourself down beside him, feeling the blades of grass stick through the material of your pants. He looks up, smiling softly before laying back down.

"Jungkook?" He hums out in acknowledgment. "Can I sleep on your chest please?"

He stutters for an answer, shutting up when you do it anyway and snuggle into his side with your head above his heart.

"That was scary back there," you mumble, feeling your eyes getting heavy. He doesn't say a word, still trying to figure out what to do with his hands. You sigh, closing your eyes in an attempt to forget what happened back there.

You feel a weight on your head and realise it's Jungkook's hand, his fingers slowly entangling themselves in your hair before gently pulling themselves out. You smile, feeling a lot more at ease with the gesture of comfort considering it's been so long since you've received comfort from anyone.

"It's okay," he murmurs, "Nothing will hurt you when you're with me."

And to be honest, being one half of the last two people on earth with Jungkook doesn't sound so bad anymore.
