A week after defeating Marlon in the Humilau Gym, Paul has finished making his way to Vertress City, and has just registered in entering the league. Several days upon having the first match of the league started, Paul fiercely made his way through every battle fought without too much trouble and has finally made it to the finals and will be facing up against Cameron (Unova) in his last match.
When the final match was due to begin, both trainers began to make their way to the battle arena, which was just a plain empty battlefield with no themes such as plain grassland and rocky terrains.
"This will be the official final match of the Vertress Conference between the two trainers, Paul and Cameron. Both sides are allowed to use up to 6 Pokemon each. Substitutions are allowed and the battle will be over when all of either side's Pokemon are unable to battle. Can both sides please send out their first Pokemon?" requested the referee.
"Watchog, I choose you," said Cameron as the Lookout Pokemon appeared on the battlefield.
"Gastrodon, standby for battle," said Paul as the Sea Slug Pokemon appeared onto the battlefield.
"Battle begin," said the referee.
"Watchog, start off with Swords Dance," ordered Cameron as the Lookout Pokemon created several animated swords that began to dance in one entire circle, sharply increasing its attack.
"Gastrodon, use Muddy Water," commanded Paul as the Sea Slug Pokemon fired a large wave of brown water at Watchog, scoring a direct hit on the latter Pokemon and inflicting damage.
"Use Hyper Fang," said Cameron as Watchog began to charge towards Gastrodon while its fangs began to glow white.
"Hit it with Sludge Bomb," ordered Paul as Gastrodon opened its mouth and fired a powerful bomb of sludge at Watchog.
"Dodge it and keep going," said Cameron but he noticed that Watchog had missed the attack. "But how?" asked Cameron in confusion.
"That's one of the additional effects of Muddy Water," explained Paul while giving a slight smirk, "where it sometimes causes the affected target to lose its accuracy. Now use Earthquake," said Paul as Gastrodon slammed itself on the ground and created a powerful earthquake that shook the entire battlefield and inflicting damage on Gastrodon, eventually causing the latter to lose balance.
