At the Pewter City Gym:

"Volcarona, Fire Blast!" shouted the challenger, Jim, a trainer from Unova. Immediately the moth-like Pokemon began shooting powerful flames towards Steelix.

"Steelix, Stone Edge!" shouted Brock, where his Mega-Evolved Steelix struck the ground with its tail causing stones to break out and head towards Volcarona.

However, due to Steelix's very slow speed, Fire Blast had directly hit its target while Volcarona's increased speed from previously using Quiver Dance had allowed it to completely dodge Stone Edge. A cloud of dust had appeared on the battlefield which dissipated half a minute later, revealing a fainted Steelix that reverted to it's original form.

"Steelix is unable to battle, Volcarona wins. Therefore, the winner is challenger Jim from Unova!" declared Forrest, who was Brock's younger brother as well as being the referee of the match.

"Great battle Steelix," Brock said as he recalled his Pokemon. "Take a good rest."

"You too Volcarona," Jim said as he withdrew Volcarona into its PokeBall.

"That was a great battle, Jim," Brock smiled at the younger trainer. "As proof of victory, here is the Boulder Badge," he continued while handing a Boulder Badge to Jim. "Your Volcarona is impressive, especially when it managed to defeat my Mega Steelix."

"Thank you Brock," Jimmy said as he walked out of the Gym, with a gleeful expression.

A few minutes later, a Pidgey appeared on the doorstep knocking on the door, which was greeted by Brock. "A Pidgey," he thought, noticing the letter tied on its talons. "Who is this letter for?" As he untied the letter from Pidgey, he discovered that the letter was from him, it read:

"A Battle Tournament?" Brock asked to himself. "Sounds interesting. 1 Million PokeDollars is definitely worth winning for," he thought to himself.

At the Petalburg City Gym:

Max was in the middle of grooming his father's Slaking when Norman approached him with a letter on his hand.

"Max, this letter is for you. I haven't opened it yet since it was for you so you can open it yourself," Norman said as Max opened it and read aloud:
