"Shut up Mae you idiot," I said as we got into the car. She shrugged and we began to make our way towards my house for a sleepover. As we pulled into the drive way we saw another car already parked in our place,it was a cop cruiser. Mae looked over at me.
"Oh you really did it this time Hart." I saw the fright in her face making the amusement in her voice fade away. Carefully we pulled up besides the car and slowly got out of the car. A tall woman with baby brown hair and aviators stepped out.
"Are you miss...," she looked down at his notebook. "Sandra Hart?" I went pale and nodded my head. She took off her hat and looked at Mae and I.
"What happened?," I asked.
"There were... complications in your mothers trip. We were told she was on a plane back home as a surprise for you, and the planes motor exploded. Your mother and 200 other people perished in the explosion. I'm sorry for your loss miss." My legs got weak and I fell to my knees. Besides me the whole time was Mae. Her parents have never really been good parents and my mother was like family to her. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks and I felt myself slowly losing my mind. I was beginning to get hysterical, I couldn't breathe as thoughts of my mothers laugh, hugs, kisses, and I love you's flooded my head. Mae remained completely still, staring at the floor, completely absent.
"My mothers gone." I looked off into the distance and saw Lauren. Staring quietly, arms crossed, confusion on her face. I slowly got up and grabbed Mae. "Is that all officer?" My legs wobbled and she reached for me.
"The court will send a member down in a few days to discuss your mothers' will." I took a shaky breath and tears formed again. The officer pulled me into her and gave me a well needed hug. She then held me at arms length. "We're really not supposed to do that, but it looked like an appropriate time." I nodded. The officer then gave a firm nod and got back into her car. Walking inside slowly Mae and I sat on the couch and hugged each other.
"I never thought I'd lose three parents."
"I never thought I'd lose my ONLY parent." The night went on, neither of us moved, talked, or did anything. The doorbell rang after a while. Mae had fallen asleep and I made sure she was covered. Making my way down stairs, I made sure to take deep breaths before answering the door. When I did, Lauren was standing there, looking confused and frightened. She saw the look on my face and immediately closed the door behind her, dragging me up the stairs she went to open my bedroom door. "Not in there, Mae is sleeping." She moves to my mothers bedroom door, and gives a questioning look. "I'm not ready to go in there, I won't be for a while."
"Sandra what happened?" Lauren's face was soft, the crease in between her brows was deepening. I went to speak and my lip began quivering,my breath shortened, and my eyes filled again. Letting myself fall into her arms, she walked us to the guest room.
"My mom.. She-she died." I felt her body stiffen. Lauren's arms wrapped around my tighter and she ran her fingers through my hair.
"We will get through this, you're not alone in this Sandra,"as she said that the door slowly swung open. We looked up from where we laid, a sleepy and sad Mae stood in the doorway. She didn't say anything, just crawled into bed with us and hugged me. There we laid for a while, Mae hugged me as Lauren lay on the other side with her chin on my head. Lauren took days off school to stay with us and, before we knew it Tuesday came around. There was knock on the door, slowly I got up to open it. There stood a tall pale man with a really bad receding hair line.
"Hello sir, can I help you?" He looked down to me and cleared his throat.
"Yes, I am here to discuss the will of the recently deceased mother of a misses," she stared closely at his paper. "Sandra Hart."I nodded my head.
"That's me, come on in." We took our seats at the couch and he pulled out a long piece of paper. Just before he began to speak Mae and Lauren came down stairs.
"Hey who's this?," Mae asked.
"This is the man from the court, he's here to talk about my mothers will." Mae and Lauren introduced themselves and we got down to business.
"You're mother left you with all of her belongings and one of the three cars she owned. She also left you with $333,333 dollars." I was a bit confused when he mentioned the cars but he soon answered my question. "To a Mae Diaz," Mae and I looked at each other. "Mrs.Hart left you one of the three cars and $333,333 dollars.
"Wow your mom really did love me like a daughter,"Mae sniffled. The man cleared his throat.
"And finally, to a Kara Alvera. She left one of the three cars and $333,333 dollars. Well I thinks that's it, I just need your signature here miss Hart and I'll be on my way."
"Wait, wait, wait, who the heck is Kara Alvera?" I asked. What the hell did my mother do.
