She slapped me. I quickly grabbed my face.
"No, NO, NOOO. Well....Kinda" I felt confused.
"How do you KINDA fuck someone," She ran her hand through her hair.
"We were kinda in the middle of it when..." It clicked in my head.
"When Kara walked in," I said, bringing my hands to my face. I couldn't help but laugh out loud. She smacked my shoulder. "Well Mae I think there's something you have to ask yourself here" She furrowed her brows.
"What?"
"Do you Like Like Christen?"
"Whaaat, no I mean she's attractive, she has beautiful eyes, her smile is a god send he-" she looked at me.
"You like her. What's the big deal, she seems to like you too. Maybe you should talk to her....and Kara cause, poor her." She gives my shoulder a shove and takes a breath before nodding. Together we make our way to Lauren and Chris. At the sight of Mae Christen stiffens and I can't help but give her a goofy smile. "Hey babe why don't we go get a pretzel or something," Lauren smiled, catching on and getting up to leave with me. We'd been walking around for a while and the sun was starting to go down.
"Can you believe it, those two?" I laughed out loud.
"Mae gave gay vibes but I never looked into it and I mean it was only a matter of time," she nodded her head at me. I was going to say something else but my phone cut me off. I gave Lauren a kiss before answering.
"Talk to me,"I answered.
"Hey,Sandra, it's officer Grayson, sorry I didn't call with the station number I'm using my personal device."
"It's all cool is everything ok with the baby?" She sighs and the other side of the line goes quiet.
"Since we can't locate her father, her mother is dead, and we haven't had any leads on relatives lately we have to enter her into an orphanage." My heart fell into my stomach.
"What, isn't there another way. Putting a child in the system is awful."
"As awful as it is there are no living relatives for her that have made themselves known." I shook my head, I knew she was just doing her job.
"Ok, thanks for the update."
"Have a good one," was all she said before hanging up. Lauren noticed my face expression. She handed me a pretzel.
"Everything ok?" I shook my head. She noticed I wasn't up for talking in the moment and didn't push me.
"Well, we should head back the school has dinner reservations at 7," I nodded and followed her back down to the beach. Once we were there we got onto the bus and I stole a spot next to Mae.
"So I talked to Christen, you were right. She did feel something for me," I smiled at her.
"That's awesome so are you to going to get together?" She smiled and that's the only answer I needed. "Well well well, look at Mae with a pretty girlfriend. Who'd of known." We chatted about her sexuality and Christen for a while before we arrived at the restaurant. As we all sat together I finally got to see Kara.
"Where the heck have YOU been?" Mae asks before I could. Kara laughs.
"I made some friends," she says pointing at a group of students who I've seen around school before but never talked too. "I missed you guys though, so what's been going on?"
"Chris and Mae decided to give it a shot," I said looking at her.
"Did Chris decide that, cause she sure seemed to be snarking orders last night from what I saw" Mae's face grew red and then here came Lauren and Christen herself.
"Hey what are you guys talking about?"Chris asked.
"Potassium Permanganate and antifreeze mixed together makes fire," I blurted. Lauren and Chris furrowed their brows.
"I didn't know you were into chemistry" she says.
"Yeah, its an amazing subject. I love reading about it," I smile. Kara choked on her water and Lauren had to pat her back for a few minutes. We chatted about anything and everything during dinner before going back to the hotel. Once there I called everyone into Lauren's room.
"What's up Sandra? I ate a lot and it's nap time," Mae said patting her belly.
"The baby girl, you guys found. She's going to an orphanage." The room was silent.
"How do you know that?" Kara asked.
"That call, it was form the station wasn't it?" Lauren said.
"It was a call from officer Grayson, she told me. I tried to see if there was another way but she has no relatives." Mae started pacing and I could see her heating up a bit.
"I told you we should have gotten her," she said in a harsh tone towards me. Christen looked from Mae to me slowly. I tried to approach her.
"Mae You kn-" She backed up and looked me in the eyes. I could see her anger.
"NO, SANDRA! THIS," she caught her self and lowered her voice. "This is your fault, its your fault she has no one there for her, you're the reason she's not with us right now. For crying out loud she's a baby dude," she said quieter but her words dripped aggression. With that she walked out of the room, closing the door behind her. Christen walked up to me and set a hand on my shoulder.
"No one blames you for this Sandra, Mae just got too attached. Ill go talk to her," she said before going after Mae. I stood there staring at the floor.
"I'm just gonna, I'm gonna go and give you guys privacy," Kara excused herself from the room. Lauren went and locked the door before pulling me into her arms. I didn't cry, I just stood there, feeling her embrace.
"Don't worry she's just heated right now, this is no where near your fault. We all understand the reason as to why we can't just go adopt that baby." She kissed my forehead and walked us to the bed. I flopped down staring at the ceiling. Lauren laid down next to me. It was quiet for a few minutes.
"What if she's right. What if I'm the reason that baby isn't being loved right now. There's five of us, and we're all adults. I mean, I feel I'm the only one not on the same page of adopting that child." I brought my hands to my face.
"Hey, look at me," I turned to face her. "You are right to think of everything that goes into adopting a child. You are right for not agreeing to this it's not just about getting her and then life goes on. There's multiple factors in this. For example we don't even know who'd adopt her, Mae can't just go sign those papers and have it be finalized. There's tons of things to think about that are no where near her mind right now. She's only thinking about the happiness of the child which is huge but it's more than that." I nuzzled her nose with mine.
"Thank you, I needed that." She smiled at me.
"But I can't stop thinking of her out there in an orphanage." Lauren sighed.
"Yeah I can't either," There was a knock at the door. I went to hide and Lauren answered. Not long after the bathroom door opened. Mae stood there with a bottle of tequila in her hand. She closed the door and slid down to sit next to me against the wall. She passed me the bottle and I took a big drink before handing it back to let her drink.
