Van:

"My flight is booked for Thursday. At least we've got the weekend, right?" I bit my thumbnail while Bondy made his way into my kitchen. "Call me Luz, love you."

"The weekend? You're flying over there for the weekend? Is the ticket even worth it?" Benji tapped the tip of his boot against my corner table.

"Of course it is," I slid my phone back into my pocket.

"You don't have any food McCann, what are you good for then?" Bondy collapsed back onto my couch. He rubbed his eyes. "Dear God I'm too old for hangovers."

"Oh, poor grandpa." Bob looked up from his camera. "Check this shot out."

I left the three talking about the festival. I was slightly hungover as well, but I was also bugged that I'd missed my flight to Lucia. She seemed to get it though. At least I'd see her.

Even if it was just for the weekend.

Lucia:

"Call me Luz, love you." Van's voice cut off. I disconnected from my voicemail, tapping my phone against the dining table. Isabel was taking a shower and I was supposed to be eating dinner. Maybe I should've called Van now.

But I really wasn't in the mood to hear him lament about missing his flight. It was his fault, wasn't it? And ok, maybe I was being mean. But I was mad. I mean, I missed my boyfriend! And how long had it been since I'd seen him?

I rubbed my forehead. Yes, Van was coming and that was going to be great and sure it would fill my void for him momentarily. But then? He'd be halfway across the country.

I could hear Isabel moving around in the hallway. I picked my half-eaten dinner up and moved toward the sink. My phone vibrated on the table.

Luca: Please tell me you edited my story

Luca: Kramer's going to have my ass if I don't give it to him

Don't be so dramatic

Almost done.

I got to my laptop and opened the email Luca had sent me. His story was so amazing, and of course, romantic. There was one particular scene where the couple made up that made me, of course, miss Van. So, of course, I was dialing Van's number and pressing the phone to my ear in no time.

"Hello baby." His voice was warm.

"Hi. How are you?"

"I'm good. Did you get my voicemail?"

"Yes. I will be there hours before your flight lands."

Van laughed. "Great, I'll be running through the halls to get to you. What are you doing?"

"I'm checking a friend's story for class."

"Oh, I'm sure she's not as good a writer as you."

I grinned, pressing the phone tighter against my ear. "You're mean. And yes, he is."

"Oh. He is. You've never told me about your writing friends."

"Well, you've never asked?" I laughed.

There was a moment of silence on Van's end. "Right, sorry, I didn't know I had to worm out all your secrets."

"My friends aren't a secret. Let's see. There's Luca. Ashley"-

"From school. These friends are from school right? How come I've never met them?"

I mindlessly clicked over the same word, feeling my stomach twist. "Because you've never been here? And you'll meet them soon enough."
