Lucia:

I watched Gabi bring Noah to her, her fingers gently playing with the fine strands on his head. "Hi, how are you? How'd you sleep?" Her voice adopted the infamous baby tone. I finished eating, chugging the glass of orange juice Mom handed me before standing up.

"Are you sure it's fine if you watch him? I don't even need to go that class, we're just"-

"Go, we'll watch him." Mom waved me away, already grabbing Noah from Gabi to feed him.

"Hiiii it's me. I know you're asleep. But I miss you so so much. Shhh Bondy shut- oh shit." I hung up from Van's voicemail. I could tell when he was drunk. I was on my way to pick up Noah from my Mom's house.

Van could wait for a callback. He was probably sleeping off a massive hangover anyway. I parked and walked toward the front door, Gabi beating me to it. "I thought you'd be gone longer."

"Nope." She stepped to the side to let me in. "How was he?"

"An angel. Makes it hard to believe he's your son."

"Ha ha." I rolled my eyes, taking another few steps forward. "Next thing you'll tell me is that it's all Van." The meaning of my words didn't hit me until we were halfway through the living room. "I mean"-

"I don't think it's from either of you actually." Gabi didn't miss a beat.

Mom was cradling Noah while she stirred something from the stove. "Stay for dinner?"

"I've got to go back to the apartment. I left something there for school."

"Fine. Call me when you're home."

"Luz," Gabi helped carry Noah's diaper bag while I was buckled him in. "If you ever need someone to watch him."

"I know, thank you." I smiled, stretching when I was done.

"Do you know how long Van will be gone?"

"Maybe like another week or two." I cleared my throat, one foot hanging off the curb. "Listen, um, why don't you come over tomorrow?"

"Yeah?" Gabi looked taken aback. She'd never set foot in Van and I's apartment.

I swallowed, nodding. "Sure. I don't have class. And I'm used to cooking big meals because of"-

"Yeah. Yeah sure." Gabi's smile was genuine.

"Alright. I'll send you the address."

Van:

"Hi. Listen, about"-

"You were drunk."

"How'd you know?" I fought a yawn. I'd slept like shit, so I had answered Lucia's call a bit slower than usual.

"Because I know you."

"What are you doing?"

"Noah's asleep and I'm drinking wine."

"Fun. Did you eat?"

"Not yet. I've had the biggest craving for a donut. But Noah was kind of fussy so we came straight home." Lucia sighed on the other end.

"Poor baby. Both of yas." I laughed, leaning against the headboard of my bed.

She sighed dramatically. "You're mean. I'm literally the mother of your child and you can't even be bothered to by sympathetic about"-
