Flashback: Hawkins Lab December 3rd, 1978.

Over the years, many more children had been brought in to the lab. Some of them were older than you, and some were younger. There was this one little girl that you were quite fond of. Her number was Eleven. Papa had told you to train her the best you could because the two of you were two of the strongest. He saw your close relationship and thought it would be smart to have you train her.

In all, there were eighteen of you. For the most part, you all lived in harmony. Some kids didn't get along, which was to be expected. Kids will be kids. You wanted to set them all free. You wanted to give them back to their families. They deserved happiness. They deserved to be normal.

You hated Papa. He pretended to be your friend, but you knew he was not. He was playing a role. He noticed your favor towards 011. That was the way he would control you. Papa would threaten to put 011 in the bad room if you didn't do as he said. She was only seven years old at the time.

Papa and the others had learned from their past mistakes. They taught you as if you were a normal child aside from the training to basically be Brenner's personal assassin. He wanted you to be the ultimate weapon. One who could fight and kill with any sort of weapon. One who could slightly jerk her head and a full room of guards would just fall to the ground, dead. But Papa saw a rebellious spark within you, just as he had seen in 001, whom he never talked much about. Papa realized that in order to keep control of the others, he'd have to lie. He would have to make them believe he was good and he would be sure to not teach them much. Mostly all of the experiments could talk. You weren't sure if Eleven could or if she just decided to keep mostly quiet and be one of few words.

Though you had that rebellious spark, you were still taught. It was crucial to have a clever assassin. The others weren't used as you were. You were patient 0, after all. The test before the test. The guinea pig.

Papa and his workers trusted you with their life, which was absolutely the worst idea they could have. They shouldn't have trusted you like they did. Because as soon as you thought of a way to break everyone out, you would all be gone. You promised to protect the others with your life.

You wished you could rescue the others. But you knew you couldn't. Your dream of escaping was just that, a dream. As long as 011 was in the facility, there was no damn way to escape because you knew she would be held captive and probably killed if you were to stage an uprising.

You needed Eleven. She was the youngest out of all of the experiments, and for some reason you felt the need to protect her with everything in your being. Of course, you cared about the others, but 011 was special to you. Maybe it was because you were the first experiment who had been in the lab the longest, and she was the youngest who was naive. Whatever it was, you loved the little girl. She was your sister for all you cared. No, the two of you didn't look the same and you weren't related by any means, but you cared about her too much.

"Zero, get back to teaching Eleven." Papa ordered.

You nodded. "Yes, Papa." You obliged.

You tried to teach her everything you could. It all seemed so easy and natural for you, but for her it wasn't. She struggled profusely, getting a nosebleed every few seconds. She was making progress though. You knew she would be one of the most powerful ones. Maybe even more powerful than you.
