Chapter Five

  Flashback: Hawkins, Indiana. November 7th, 1983

The plan was in order. El was to escape on her own, and hide. You knew they would send you after her, and they did. They had given you clothes that were the style at the time, but you denied the look they wanted to give you.

You asked for certain clothing that went with the style that you had always wished to have. But anything was better than that damn ugly hospital gown or the white uniform that the workers tended to wear. The other thing you wore was for missions and it was just an all black uniform. Since Papa was desperate, he gave you whatever you asked for. You knew that Eleven would be okay, so you had time.

You got dressed, and when Papa came back, he led you outside of your room, but not before you grabbed a backpack. They had given you one to carry your books from the teaching room and to your own room. As he was walking, you used your power to steal the money from his wallet, and put it in your backpack. You put the wallet back with no problem.

You continued to do this as you walked through the hallways, stealing money from almost everyone in the lab. When you reached the front, your backpack was filled with money. Papa was a tall man, taller than you. He placed his hands on your shoulders and smiled.

"Bring Eleven back, Zero. We need you." He said.

You nodded even though you had no intention of coming back. You and El were going to find somewhere else to live. Maybe out of the state. Anywhere to get away from Papa.

You set out on your journey to find El. But you weren't looking for her. You needed more time to think of a plan. You also needed to find a way to stop the huge monster that El had accidentally released by opening a gateway to a different universe. You couldn't leave until you did that.

You and El had kept in contact. She was with a boy named Mike whom you met later on. He and his friends were looking for their friend named Will Byers. You had stayed with a boy too. His name was Steve Harrington. His parents had let you stay in their house after you told them you needed help. That was your cover. A helpless girl. You had also used your powers to mind control them into letting you stay. The only reason you chose them was because, well, their house was the nicest.

Throughout that year, you had gotten close to Steve. He became your best friend. He was so kind to you, and at one point you thought you had a crush on him, but you didn't. You had never met a boy your age before. You didn't want to kiss him or cuddle, but just talk. You wanted a friend and you got one. You also befriended Nancy Wheeler, Mike's older sister, and Jonathan Byers, Will's older brother.

Steve's parents were almost never home. He also didn't know about your powers. You didn't tell anyone at first besides Eleven's friends since Eleven had told them. They had taken a liking to you mostly because of your nerdy references to Star Wars and other things they liked too. They didn't understand how you were so educated and understood every pop culture reference they had brought up, while Eleven could barely make a sentence. You explained to them you were the very first test subject and the people were naive at the time.

After everyone found out about the place the El called the Upside-down, everything seemed to fall into place. As you were hiding from Papa after he found out you had betrayed him, you helped Eleven and her friends find Will while also helping Nancy and Johnathan look for the monster that El's friends called the Demogorgan.

El agreed to find Will using the bath method, which you didn't like. It scared you because you knew it scared her. Hopper and Joyce Byers wanted to be sure that El was safe while doing this. So, you all had gone to Hawkins middle school that the boys went to.
