The first thing Michelle did when she walked into the parking lot behind the Jolly Coffee Bar was unclip her hair so it fell down loose. To Michelle, it felt better that way. What would have been better is if she had seen her father's car in the parking lot instead of John's. He looked impatient as she walked towards him.
"I'm only picking you up because Dad made me," John said as she opened the passenger door.
"Lucky me," Michelle said sarcastically as she got in and sat down.
As he started the car she put her seatbelt on. Michelle felt the job interview was exhausting and the last thing she needed was the attitude from John.
"How was the interview?" he asked.
"It was stressful," she admitted.
"Well, I wouldn't worry about it. You probably didn't get the job,"
She suspected that was probably the case and hearing him say that was the last thing she needed.
"Fuck you, John!" she said. "How do you know?"
"I know because I know you," he said. "You're not the working type,"
"At least I want to be the working type,"
John didn't care what Michelle thought of him because he really believed he was right.

On the way to school, Michelle didn't talk to John about the job interview and he didn't bring it up. In fact, they didn't talk at all. They also didn't talk to each other at school or on the drive home. But there was a surprise waiting for them on the answering machine after John pressed play.
"Hello, this is Caryn Bowen from the Jolly Coffee Bar calling for Michelle Slater," the recording said. "I'm calling to let you know that you've got the job and you start training on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. Please call me back to confirm that you can make it,"
After the message ended Michelle looked unbearably smug to John and he hated it.
"Don't say a bloody word," John said.
While she was still smug she respected his wishes and didn't say anything. Instead, she held up her right hand and gave him the finger.

That night was Mrs. Hughes' birthday and Daniel and Mr. Hughes were sitting at the kitchen table to celebrate. Mr. Hughes sat next to Mrs. Hughes and Daniel sat opposite. They had sung "Happy Birthday" and Mrs. Hughes cut the chocolate cake. Only there was something wrong. After she cut the cake all the way down to the bottom and withdrew the knife from the cake it didn't have remnants of chocolate cake on the blade. Both sides of the blade were tainted with blood. She was sickened and horrified by what she saw.
"What's the matter, Mrs. Hughes?" Daniel asked. "Is something wrong?"
Mrs. Hughes was too terrified to speak. Daniel could see this and he picked up his own knife and stabbed Mr. Hughes in the throat with it. She screamed as Mr. Hughes put his right hand on his throat in a feeble attempt to stop the bleeding. Then Daniel looked at her looking seriously deranged.
"Oh, shut up!" he said annoyed.
Daniel quickly stabbed Mrs. Hughes in the neck. She then fell over backward on the kitchen floor. He quickly pulled out his chair.
"No!" she managed to say in spite of her wound.
He quickly walked over to Mrs. Hughes, leaned over her and stabbed her in the chest. Then the Stranger leaned over both of them.
