As John had predicted the house was full of people when he and Michelle arrived at the party. "Unbelievable" by EMF could be heard playing from the backyard on the cd player. They entered the house but neither of them was looking for Martin. When Michelle entered the lounge room she saw Julie, Veronica and the other girls she thought of as the Bitch Squad. They all smiled at her but she knew there was an agenda behind the smiles.
John scoped the lounge room for Natalie and couldn't see her anywhere. He was momentarily worried by this but told himself to relax and walked into the backyard. In the backyard there was no sign of Natalie at all. Now he started to wonder what the hell was going on.
Martin was holding a drink in his hand as he entered the backyard and saw John. As Martin walked up to him he was glad that John was there as he thought of John as his best friend.
"Coma boy, you made it," Martin said.
It was obvious to John that Martin was a little tipsy so he obviously knew he had to keep his guard up.
"You're damn right I made it," John said with a forced smile on his face. "I came over earlier to bring the beer, didn't I? So, have you seen Natalie?"
"Seen Natalie?" Martin asked surprised. "I thought she was coming with you."
"Michelle told me she was getting her own way here,"
"Then I haven't seen her, mate,"
"Thanks, I'll ask Michelle what's going on."
"Hey John, relax. I'm sure she'll turn up. The party only just started."
"Yeah, I know. But if anyone would know what's going on it's Michelle,"
"Fair enough,"
John walked away from Martin and walked back inside the house to find Michelle standing by herself.
"Michelle, where's Natalie?" John asked.
"She's at home," Michelle said.
That wasn't what he wanted to hear and couldn't believe it.
"What do you mean she's at home?" he asked angrily.
She didn't appreciate that John was getting angry for no reason.
"She's got food poisoning," she said. "She ate a bad burger at lunch and called to tell me she's not coming,"
"And why didn't you tell me about this?" John demanded.
"Because I didn't think it was any of your business," she said insulting slow.
"Don't talk to me like that. You should have told me."
Michelle thought John was acting like an idiot.
"No, I shouldn't have," Michelle said. "You're not her boyfriend,"
So there it was for John. He was at a party hosted by a psycho while his naive parents were out of town and the girl he wanted wasn't even there.
*****
Later into the night, John was talking to other friends in the backyard while Michelle was in the lounge room surrounded by the Bitch Squad. None of them were happy with her at all.
"We haven't seen you talking to any guys the whole time you've been here," Julie said.
"Well, no guys have come up to me," Michelle replied.
"That's not good enough,' Julie said. "Veronica and I still have the bet,"
"Oh, come on," Michelle said in disbelief.
