When Mr. Slater got home he found John sitting at his desk trying to do his homework but having a lot of trouble concentrating. He heard Mr. Slater enter his bedroom but he didn't look up to look at him.
"I hope you're proud of what you tried to achieve but it ends now," Mr. Slater said sternly.
"It'll never end," John said. "Not until things are restored to the way they should be,"
"I want your sanity restored,"
John looked at Mr. Slater with a look of determined anger in his eyes.
"I'm not crazy," he said.
"A lot of people would beg to differ and I want you to start counselling," Mr. Slater replied.
"I'm not going to start counselling. I just want Michelle back,"
Mr. Slater walked closer to John so he was standing over him in a very threatening manner.
"John, if you don't start counselling I'll have you sent away again," he said.
As angry as John was he found that thought to be truly frightening.
"You can't do that to me, Dad," he said doing his best not to sound scared.
"Don't tell me I can't do it when I've done it before," Mr. Slater replied. "Now you'll either start counselling and finish high school this year, or you can repeat high school next year because we had to send you away. So those are your choices. What choice do you want to make?"
John took a moment to answer that question.
"Fine, I'll go to counselling," he said.
It was obvious to Mr. Slater that he was only telling him what he wanted to hear and that was enough for now.
*****
John had a lot of trouble sleeping that night and he was relieved to see that Mr. Slater wasn't in the kitchen the next morning at breakfast. Only Mrs. Slater was there. As soon as he entered the kitchen she smiled at him and he found that a little unnerving and he couldn't figure out why.
"Good morning, John," Mrs. Slater said.
"Morning, Mum," John replied.
"I had a really nice time with Natalie last night. I couldn't believe all the memories that came back to me,"
When it came to the way Mrs. Slater was talking she didn't sound happy to John. She sounded obsessed and that really disturbed him.
"Could you invite Natalie back here again soon?" she asked.
"I don't know," he said. "We're both really busy at this time of year,"
That wasn't what Mrs. Slater wanted to hear and she began to become hysterical.
"No, you have to invite her over again!" she said. "There's so much more I have to say to her about Michelle. You have to invite Natalie over again!"
John couldn't believe the way his mother was acting as he found it seriously frightening.
"Okay, I'll invite her over soon," he said quickly.
That wasn't good enough for Mrs. Slater as she wanted an exact date and John did his best to calm her down.
*****
John couldn't have gotten to school fast enough after his mother had acted that morning. Natalie was waiting for him in the study area of the library. It was obvious to him that she was upset about something. Before he could ask what was wrong she walked up to John and hugged him. He hugged her back.
