For Michelle and Daniel, the rest of the week was very tense. They couldn't decide which was going to be worse. What the Slaters were going to ask Daniel or how John was going to ruin whatever Daniel was going to say. But John gave Michelle a wonderful surprise that she wasn't expecting as she and John set the table while Mrs. Slater was finalising the cooking.
"I won't be staying for dinner," John said. "I'm going out with Natalie,"
"What?" Mrs. Slater asked offended.
"Really?" Michelle asked happily relieved.
"It's a last-minute thing," John said very quickly to Mrs. Slater.
Then he walked very quickly out of the kitchen.
"I'll see you later," he said as he approached the front door.
Mrs. Slater wasn't going to tolerate that for a second and she started to walk out of the kitchen but Michelle stepped in front of her.
"Mum, please don't," she said.
"Michelle, we're expecting company," Mrs. Slater said.
"I know and I don't want it ruined by John," Michelle replied.
"But I've worked hard on what we're going to eat tonight,"
"And Daniel's really nervous about tonight,"
"No, Michelle, John is going to eat dinner with us like he's supposed to,"
Mrs. Slater walked past Michelle and to the front door. When she walked outside John's car was already gone. It was obvious to her that Michelle wasn't in on John's plan but she was angry that he had succeeded in it thanks to Michelle.

When John arrived at her house Natalie was very nervous. She wanted her plan to go without a hitch and the last thing she needed was for John to screw it up. He knocked on the front door right on time. She walked to the front door and was alarmed that Mrs. Ray was there ahead of her to open it.
"That'll be for me," she said quickly.
"How do you know?" Mrs. Ray asked curiously.
She ignored that question by opening the front door to reveal John standing there.
"Hi Natalie," John said. "Hi, Mrs. Ray,"
"Hello John," Mrs. Ray said. "I didn't know you were coming over tonight,"
"He didn't come here to come over," Natalie said. "We're going out,"
"Oh, is that right?" Mrs. Ray asked with bitter sarcasm before turning her attention to John. "And where do you think you're going without clearing it with us first?"
"Just to the Drive-In," Natalie said.
John was thrown by the fact that Natalie's parents didn't know they were going out and tried not to show it.
"Yeah, we're going to the Drive-In," he said trying not to sound nervous.
The fact that he was trying not to sound nervous made Mrs. Ray very suspicious.
"What movies are you going to see?" Mrs. Ray asked.
Natalie started to feel scared as she had no idea what was on.
"'Freejack' and 'Pacific Heights'," John said.
"And why didn't you check with us that it was okay for you and Natalie to go out tonight?" Mrs. Ray asked.
