It was their first night back together as a family and it took Mr. Slater nearly half an hour to convince John to sit at the kitchen table for dinner. As Michelle sat at her desk she was trying to draw a picture of Daniel but she was finding it impossible because she was terrible at drawing. On her bedroom floor were scrunched up pieces of paper with previous failed attempts. As she had no photographs of him she was desperate because she was worried that she was going to forget what he looked like. Then she heard a knock on her door and that was the last thing she wanted to hear as she just wanted to be left alone.

"Go away," Michelle said.

"Michelle, it's your mother and we're about to have dinner," Mrs. Slater said.

"Then eat it,"

"Michelle, we're eating dinner as a family and I want you to sit at the kitchen table with us,"

"Is John sitting at the table?"

"Of course he is,"

"Then I'd rather starve because I can't even look at John,"

Mrs. Slater didn't say anything for a moment and at that moment Michelle assumed that she had worked away. But the fact was that Mrs. Slater was simply trying to think of what to say next as she was proving to be impossible but Mrs. Slater knew that she had a right to be.

"Michelle, it's really important to your father and me that we have dinner as a family," Mrs. Slater said.

Michelle was angry and frustrated that Mrs. Slater hadn't gone away so she could return to her attempts to drawing Daniel's picture.

"Daniel and I were going to have a family and John stole that from us," she said.

On the other side of the door, Mrs. Slater thought Michelle was just complaining but then she heard her starting to cry. Mrs. Slater tried to open her bedroom door but it was still locked.

"Michelle, can I come in?" Mrs. Slater asked concerned.

"Just leave me alone!" Michelle cried.

Mrs. Slater really wanted to enter Michelle's bedroom but she knew that wasn't going to happen. Her heart was breaking her and Mrs. Slater hated that she couldn't do anything for her.

"I'll be back later with your dinner," Mrs. Slater said.

Michelle didn't say anything so Mrs. Slater took the hint and walked away from her bedroom door.

The next morning Michelle had breakfast in her bedroom while John had breakfast at the kitchen table with his parents. He didn't say a lot as he ate and was secretly grateful that Michelle wasn't at the kitchen table with them. Due to the intensity of her hatred towards him, Mrs. Slater drove Michelle to school while Mr. Slater drove him. John missed his car and he was dying to get it back. On the drive, Michelle spotted Natalie walking to school.

"Mum, can you stop and pick Natalie up?" Michelle asked.

"If you'd like me to, sure," Mrs. Slater said.

Mrs. Slater pulled over and Michelle quickly opened her door.

"Hi Natalie," Michelle said. "Would you like a lift?"

"I might be getting a lift with John," Natalie replied.

Michelle did her best to hide her anger.

"Can't you get a lift with me instead?" she asked. "You can catch up with John at school and I really need to talk to you,"

Natalie hadn't really spoken to her since she had gotten home from the hospital and really needed to talk to her as well.
