With no other options that John could think of, he drove to Ms. Mathis' house. Natalie couldn't understand why since she couldn't see what good that would do.

"Just meet her," John said.

"Why?" Natalie asked.

"So you can see what a bad liar she is,"

Natalie sighed with frustration. As they pulled up to Ms. Mathis' front yard she was filled with dread as to what was going to happen. After he had unfastened his seatbelt and opened his car door he couldn't help but notice that Natalie hadn't done either of those things.

"Natalie, what are you doing?" he asked.

"I don't want to meet her," she replied.

"But I need you to meet her,"

"What's the point of me meeting her?"

"I've already told you why and it isn't just important to me, it's important to Michelle,"

"How is it important to Michelle?"

"It's important to Michelle because she needs to be rescued and I don't do that without your help,"

Natalie couldn't see how she could help based on his logic but she did unfasten her seatbelt and John was relieved to see her do it. Then they both got out of the car and walked to Ms. Mathis' front door. He knocked on it quickly.

"Ms. Mathis, it's John Slater and I really need to talk to you about Michelle," John said loudly.

There was no response from the other side of the door so he knocked on it again.

"Ms. Mathis!" he said loudly.

Natalie really started to feel uneasy about the whole situation.

"John, maybe she's not home," Natalie said.

"Like hell, she's not home," he said. "Her car's still here,"

"Then maybe she went out for a walk," she suggested nervously.

"Why go out for a walk when you can drive?" he asked dismissively.

Natalie couldn't take anymore and she was on the verge of screaming.

"John, can't we just go?" she asked hysterically. "She's not home!"

He had never seen her so hysterical and that really scared him.

"Okay, we'll go," John said.

As they walked back to the car John couldn't help but notice that Natalie was shaking.

On the drive back to her house Natalie hadn't said a word and that really scared John. But he couldn't give up on his sister.

"Maybe we can try again some other time," he said. "I know Ms. Mathis knows something,"

"I don't want to know if she knows something," she replied.

John couldn't believe what Natalie just said.

"What do you mean you don't want to know?" he asked.

"John, has it occurred to you the reason Ms. Mathis didn't open the door is that the Stranger has done something to her?" she asked. "Has it occurred to you that if the Stranger could do something to Michelle then he could do something to me?"

John had already thought of those possibilities but nothing was going to get in the way of getting his sister back.

"I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you," he said confidently.
