Before they had arrived at Caloundra Daniel really thought he had known Michelle. He had been confident that she had been the kind of girl that wouldn't have thrown herself into the arms of someone so sleazy. But he had been proven wrong and he didn't know how to handle it. As John drove them home the tension in the car was palpable. Natalie was grateful to be sitting in the front seat with John. As Michelle sat in the backseat with Daniel she never imagined for one second that the day was going to end so badly.
"You really had sex with that asshole?" Daniel asked disgusted.
"Yeah, I did and I'm sorry that I did," Michelle said.
By being sorry that she did Michelle was only talking about herself. Daniel misinterpreted that as an apology to him.
"That guy was the biggest piece of shit I've ever met in my life," he said. "What were you thinking?"
Natalie was getting tired of Daniel's attitude and decided to step in by turning around to face him.
"Daniel, you don't know the full story," she said. "Michelle had to do it,"
Daniel couldn't believe how that could be true at all.
"What do you mean she had to do it?" he asked incredulously.
"Some of the bitches at school thought Michelle was something she wasn't," Natalie said.
Michelle and Natalie did their best to explain themselves and by the end of it, Daniel wasn't impressed.
"So that's why you hung out on the oval by yourself," he said judgementally.
Michelle started to feel really afraid about what the future had in store for her.

By the time they arrived at his house, Daniel couldn't have been more relieved. John was relieved to be getting rid of him while Natalie was relieved to be getting rid of the tension. Daniel got out of the car without saying a word and that terrified Michelle. As he stood next to the car to untie Mr. Hughes' surfboard Michelle got out of the car and walked over to him so they could have a little privacy.
"Daniel," Michelle said.
He didn't say anything as he pretended to be concentrating on the knot he was untying.
"Daniel," she said louder.
It was obvious to Daniel that she wasn't going to give up so he decided to answer her.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Will I see you at school on Monday?" she asked hopefully.
Daniel wasn't entirely sure how to answer that question because he was still in love with her but he was facing a lot of confusion when it came to her past.
"Maybe," he said being as honest as he could.
That wasn't the answer Michelle wanted to hear and she felt a lump in her throat.
"What do you mean by maybe?" she asked doing her best not to sound upset.
"I mean I don't know," he said. "That asshole on the beach-"
"Daniel, that guy doesn't mean anything to me," she said interrupting in a panic. "He's nothing,"
"What you did with him wasn't nothing," Daniel said.
Michelle felt scared to hear him say that as it sounded frighteningly judgemental. As he finally got the surfboard loose she stood there shaking. Natalie saw her shaking and decided to get out of the car to see if she could help. Only by the time Natalie had gotten out of the car and walked over to Michelle Daniel had run over to the front door and walked inside. She could hardly breathe so Natalie hugged her.
