In addition to Michele giving John a hard time over Daniel's death, there was one other thing that was really bothering him and that was the fact that he didn't have his car back yet. As Mr. Slater drove him to school the next morning he was determined to get an answer.
"Dad, when am I going to get my car back?" John asked.
"The insurance will pay for the damages," Mr. Slater said.
"Yeah, I know that but when will I be getting my car back? I need it,"
"I know you need it,"
"So what's the hold-up?"
Mr. Slater sighed apprehensively.
"John, you have no idea what it was like for your mother and me the night you had the crash," he said.
"I was in the car, Dad," John said. "I know exactly what it was like,"
"John, you don't understand. You're not a parent yet so you couldn't possibly understand our point of view,"
"So what's your point?"
"The point is that night was terrifying for us and your mother and I don't want you driving,"
In the months that had followed the crash, John didn't just want to recover. He wanted his car back so he could get on with his life and forget that the crash had ever happened.
"Dad, you've got to be kidding!" he said frustrated. "I need my car back and I can't be stuck getting lifts from you and Mum,"
"Your mother and I aren't ready for you to have your car back," Mr. Slater said. "So your uncle is going to look after it until we're ready,"
John believed he was ready and they continued to argue about it all the way to school.

At school, Michelle had lunch on a seat outside of the library as she hadn't been allowed to return. During the first lunch break, Natalie walked up to her to see how she was going. She wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone as Natalie walked up to her.
"Hi Michelle," Natalie said. "How are you going?"
Michelle didn't say anything and Natalie assumed that she hadn't heard her.
"I said how are you going," she said louder.
"I don't want to talk to anyone," Michelle said.
Natalie sat down next to her while she wished Natalie would just go away.
"I just want you to know that I'm sorry about that night and I know what you're going through," Natalie said.
Natalie naively thought that was the right thing to say but she couldn't have been more wrong.
"You know what I'm going through?" Michelle asked bitterly. "Your boyfriend is alive. My boyfriend is dead. You haven't got a fucking clue what I'm going through!"
"But I voted that we leave the drive-in that night," Natalie said.
Michelle didn't want to listen to anything she had to say.
"Natalie, fuck off!" she said harshly.
Natalie was shocked to hear Michelle talk to her like that but she took the hint by standing up and walking away.
