Michelle and John were still arguing when Mrs. Slater arrived home. As soon as Mrs. Slater entered the lounge room she was furious with both of them. Michelle and John were arguing so much they hadn't heard Mrs. Slater open the front door and enter the lounge room.
"John, Michelle, sit down!" Mrs. Slater said loudly.
Hearing their mother talk like that made them forget all about their argument and they sat down on the sofa. Mrs. Slater stood in front of them with a very angry look in her eyes that Michelle and John had seen before and were truly scared of.
"I got calls from five parents today," Mrs. Slater said. "Five parents that said you had sex at the party on Saturday night. Now, what have you got to say for yourself?"
This was the moment Michelle had been dreading and thought she would be ready for but she couldn't have been more wrong. She was so scared she couldn't even speak.
"Answer me!" Mrs. Slater said loudly.
"I-I-I just wanted to lose my virginity," Michelle said. "You weren't supposed to find out about it,"
"And you think that makes it okay?" Mrs. Slater asked. "You're only sixteen. You're too young."
"Yeah, Michelle," John said believing he had a right to say that.
John didn't have a right to say that and Mrs. Slater looked at him sharply.
"Shut up, John," Mrs. Slater said. "You swore to your father and me that you would keep a close eye on her and you didn't. Now, what have you got to say for yourself?"
"I-I-I did try to keep an eye on her and I didn't know this was going to happen," he replied feeling very nervous.
"You should have tried harder to keep a closer eye on her,"
"How was I supposed to keep a close eye on her at a party? People were talking to me. I couldn't just walk around like Michelle's bodyguard,"
Mrs. Slater could understand John's logic but was still angry about the situation.
"I knew I shouldn't have let you go to that party," Mrs. Slater said almost to herself.
"But I had to go," Michelle said. "Otherwise I would have been called gay again."
"Oh, for crying out loud!" Mrs. Slater said annoyed. "Couldn't you have just ignored them?"
"No, I couldn't have just ignored them. You have no idea what high school is like. If I hadn't lost my virginity they would have put me through hell,"
She knew she was only talking in half-truths because of the hell Julie and the others were putting her through now. She had gone from being the school singer to the school slut.
"But don't you know what people are saying about you now?" Mrs. Slater asked.
Michelle stood up in anger.
"Of course I know what people are saying about me!" she said upset. "I've been called nothing but a slut at school all day!"
It was obvious to Mrs. Slater that she was upset but Mrs. Slater still had to maintain discipline.
"Why didn't you tell us what happened at the party?" Mrs. Slater asked.
"Why should I have told you about it?" Michelle asked back. "All you, Dad and John care about are how it matters to you! You don't care about me!"
"Don't tell me I don't care about you! What if you end up pregnant?"
Michelle was simultaneously shocked and embarrassed to hear her mother say that.
