Michelle literally had blood on her hands: Natalie's blood. Natalie wasn't dead from her attack but the attack had been so severe for her that a small part of her actually wished she was dead. As Michelle sat in Ms. Erin's office she didn't care that she was even in there. All she felt was the satisfaction that she had gotten justice for her man.
"Michelle, I've never seen a student beaten the way you beat up Natalie," Ms. Erin said.
"So what?" Michelle asked impatiently.
"So it means your punishment isn't going to be taken lightly," Ms. Erin replied. "Natalie has been traumatised by your attack,"
"She'll get over it," Michelle said flippantly.
"Michelle, I was under the impression that Natalie was your best friend. What changed?"
"She got my boyfriend killed. That's what changed,"
At that moment Mrs. Slater entered the office. Ms. Erin stood up but Michelle remained seated and didn't look at her mother. Mrs. Slater looked at Michelle and was shocked by the appearance of her daughter with blood on her shirt and hands. Then she looked at Ms. Erin.
"Is what you told me on the phone true?" Mrs. Slater asked.
"Yes, I'm afraid it is," Ms. Erin said.
"But how did this happen? I gave Natalie a lift to school and they chatted all the way there. What happened?"
"Why don't you ask me, Mum?" Michelle asked. "I'm the one that beat the crap out of her,"
Mrs. Slater couldn't believe how indifferent Michelle was being about the situation.
"Michelle, do you have any idea how much trouble you're in?" Mrs. Slater asked.
"I don't care how much trouble I'm in," Michelle replied. "Daniel's dead and Natalie got what she deserved,"
"No, she didn't," Mrs. Slater said to Michelle before she turned her attention back to Ms. Erin. "How is Natalie?"
"Natalie's really been traumatised by the attack," Ms. Erin said.
"Oh, please," Michelle said sarcastically. "You're just saying that to make it sound more dramatic,"
"Michelle, shut up!" Mrs. Slater said desperately.
"We haven't been able to get in touch with Natalie's mother," Ms. Erin explained. "There appears to be a problem with the phone lines,"
"Oh God," Mrs. Slater said.
"We're going to have to suspend Michelle over this," Ms. Erin said.
Michelle didn't care that she was being suspended but Mrs. Slater felt sick about it.
"How long will she be suspended for?" Mrs. Slater asked.
While Ms. Erin and Mrs. Slater discussed the specifics of her suspension Michelle wished they would hurry up because she was sick of being at school.

When John saw Natalie's face in the nurse's office he was horrified by it. Her right eye was swollen shut and the left side of her face was dark purple. The horror of her face wasn't lost on Natalie.
"Aren't you going to say anything?" Natalie asked. "How about 'it's not as bad as it looks' and 'you'll be fine'?"
John couldn't bring himself to say anything. All he could do was walk closer to Natalie. She hugged him back but only gently because of her injuries.
