In the time since Daniel had died Michelle felt like she was really getting her way. Obviously, if he hadn't died and she was still pregnant then life would have been perfect but she had to be content with what she had. As the bus pulled up two streets away from Ms. Mathis' house she got off the bus feeling very excited. But as she walked closer to Ms. Mathis' house she started to feel very nervous.

When Mrs. Slater first told John that Michelle was going to get her singing lessons back he objected at first but then he grew to like the idea as it meant having more time at home to himself. But there was something that he wanted to do. John and Mr. Slater were sitting in the lounge room when John decided to broach the subject.
"Dad, I want to pick Michelle up from her singing lesson," he said.
"I really don't think that's a good idea," Mr. Slater replied. "Besides, your mother wants to do it,"
"I know but I really think I should,"
"Why?"
"I just do," John said. "So can you please just trust me on this?"
Mr. Slater wasn't convinced at first but John gave a very convincing argument.

When Michelle arrived at the singing lesson Ms. Mathis had been tough on her because of how far behind she was and that's exactly what Michelle needed. She didn't want to be coddled over Daniel's death because what she really needed was to be reminded that she wanted to be a singer.
"I know you've been through a lot but you really need to get back on track," Ms. Mathis said.
"I know and I'll work hard to get there," Michelle replied.
They were about to say a lot more to each other when they heard a car horn being honked from outside rather obnoxiously. Michelle couldn't believe what she just heard.
"You've got to be kidding me!" she said almost to herself.
Michelle stood up and walked outside to see John sitting inside Mr. Slater's car. Seeing him in that car made her feel like she was having a bad dream.
"John, what the hell are you doing here?" Michelle asked.
"I convinced Dad to let me pick you up by pointing out that I'll be going to university next year and that he can't keep me from driving forever," John replied proudly.
She just wanted to scream as it was obvious that this was a ploy to get her to talk to him because John was tired of feeling guilty over Daniel's death.

Michelle didn't have enough money for a bus ride home. That's the only reason she had to accept a ride home with John. He had overheard this fact as Michelle talked to Mrs. Slater that morning and he decided to use this to his full advantage. On the way home, he had tried to engage Michelle in conversation but she refused to take the bait. So she just sat in the backseat quietly. She was fully prepared to celebrate her petty victory at home but when they got home they came home to something neither of them was expecting. John's car completely restored parked out the front with Mr. Slater standing next to it. When Michelle and John got of Mr. Slater's car neither of them could believe what they were seeing.
"So are you pleased to have your car back?" Mr. Slater asked.
"Yeah," John said in shock.
"I thought about what you said and you were right. So it was time that you got your car back,"
