Chapter Nineteen

Kyung Mi's POV

Both Jae and I were eating alone waiting for dad to arrive home. It was silent between us as we ate our food. "Dad didn't say what he had to do?" I asked looking at my younger brother. He shook his head. "No, he didn't say what other than he had to take care of something. By the way your homemade beef hot pot is delicious. You should seriously consider going into the coronary program". Jae said as he dug into his beef hot pot.

"Thanks Jae for liking my cooking. Although I enjoy cooking, I really want to try photography". Jae nodded before opening his mouth. "You just do you sis". Jae encouraged. All the while we were eating dinner I couldn't help but think where dad was and what he was doing. Ever since mom passed away dad would disappear for some time not giving any information.

Jae was in his room doing homework while I cleaned up the kitchen. Cooking sure does leave a lot of messes. I just got done cleaning up the stove when the front door to the house opened. My head snapped in the direction of the feet coming into the kitchen. Dad came walking in a hard cast on his right hand.

"Dad what happened?" I asked running to his side. He gave me a sheepish smile before sitting at the table. "Oh, I was helping my friend with his truck when the hood smashed my hand. I'll be fine don't you worry about me". "Of course I'm going to worry. You're my dad. Have you eaten anything? I made beef hot pot". I offered running to the fridge.

"I ate on the way home. I'm going to go to my office". Dad stood up before heading to his office. But before he could I stopped him. "Hey, dad I'm going to see a friend is that okay?" I asked hoping he'd say yes. He looked at his watch before nodding. "Sure you can go and visit just be back early. It's a school night". I nodded. "Yes, dad I'll be back soon. Jae's in his room doing homework". I said as I grabbed my hoodie and slipping it on.

During the walk I felt paranoid as every noise startled me. I looked behind me noticing two guys wearing black clothing, I picked up my pace hoping they didn't follow. As I rounded a corner they were still following me. I gripped tighter onto my pepper spray walking closer to my destination.

Suddenly I was tapped on the shoulder causing me to pepper spray the person. "Ah, geez Kung Mi are you crazy? Its me Chen". Chen yelled. I turned around shocked to see Chen. "Oh my gosh I'm so sorry Chen. Here let me buy you water so you can clean your eyes out. Again I'm so sorry. I thought you were an attacker". I apologized out of feeling guilty. "Just stay here I'll go get water from across the street". I said as I started running across the street to the vending machine.

I bought the water running across the street giving it to Chen. "Thanks Kyung Mi". I watched as Chen rinsed his eyes out flinching every now and then. "I'm so sorry Chen". I apologized feeling guilty I hurt my classmate. "You were just protecting yourself. I get it. I would do the same. Where are you headed?" Chen asked after rinsing his eyes.

"I was just going to visit Kai. Were you stalking me just a bit ago?" I asked growing curious. Chen shook his head. "No, I wasn't stalking you. I was just taking an evening walk, then I saw you and thought I'd say hi. Want me to walk you to the hospital? It's late for you to be walking alone". Chen insisted. "Don't you have plans or homework to do?" I asked curious as to why he is always outside.

"No, I already got my homework done at the hospital". He said as he shrugged. Why did Kai's friends have to protect him? Was Kai some kind of secret celebrity? I shook my head at the thought. "What's on your mind?" Chen asked cutting my thoughts off. I looked up at him surprised. "Can I ask a question? One that might no be my business". I asked anxious of his answer. "Depends on what the question is". Chen answered stuffing his hands in his hoodie.

I took a deep breath wondering if I should ask. "Are you going to ask or are you afraid that I can't answer it". He asked raising a perfect brow. "Right why do you guys have to protect Kai? I know there are people after him, but I want to know why.  Because it also involves my safety as well. But I'm afraid to ask Kai". I asked looking as Chen sighed.

"Well I can't exactly say, because I'm not allowed to, but yes some people are after him. And we're protecting Kai the best we can. They come after people who are close to him, but by no means is Kai a bad person if you're thinking that. Kai's led a hard life one where he's had to pick himself up a lot. He's had no one but us as family to rely on us. Now that you've been closer to him you're in danger to which means we have to protect you to".

"If Kai isn't a bad person why are they after him? In the woods that night multiple people were after Kai and he was scared. Then the incident with the car. If someone is targeting him why isn't he going to the police? They can protect him as well". I continued as we walked on.

"I don't have all the answers Kyung Mi, but I know the police can't get involved. It's something personal for Kai and the other people. But do me a favor don't search any deeper than this. It's much too dangerous. And I can't stand to see you get hurt". At the last part Chen hesitated.

I looked at him confused as he rubbed his nape. "What do you mean?" I asked confused. Chen looked nervous as he awkwardly stood in front of me.

"I. . . I like you So Kyung Mi". Chen admitted rendering me speechless. I went to open my mouth but let it shut. Chen liked me? How did I not see it? Was I that obvious to his feelings?

"I'm sorry Chen, but I already like someone else".
