"You're not listening!" you shout to your boyfriend. He rolls his eyes and goes back to eating the fudge.
"You're right, I'm not. You know why?" You cross your arms.
"Why?"
"Because what your insinuating is bloody insane."
"I've seen you with Lavender! You're flirting with her," you insist. He finally looks up from his food.
"And when did you see this?" He asks mockingly.
"Thursday in between classes. You even let her kiss your cheek and lean on you." He looks down in shame.
"It meant nothing," he mutters.
"It means everything, Ron!" You take deep breaths to keep from crying. You look away from Ron and at the fireplace. "I think we need to break up." You feel Ron's eyes on you.
"What?" he breathes. You keep your eyes on the fire.
"This isn't working anymore. I'm not happy. You're not happy. We can't-we can't work." He stands but you still keep your eyes trained on the fire. He steps into your line of view but you refuse to look him in the eyes.
"(Y/N), look at me," he says. You don't. He takes your face in his hands and lifts your head gently, forcing you to look him in the eyes. "We can make it work. We— we can work on it. I'm not ready to let this go." Tears fall from your eyes and you move his hands from your face and hold them in front of you.
"I don't want to let this go either. But we've been fighting almost every night. We've left the honeymoon stage awhile ago but we've been fighting too long for it to be healthy." He swallows thickly.
"I— I know. I know. But we can try harder." You shake your head sadly and pull your hands away.
"I think we're just scared to leave something we know so well," you whisper.
"No, I'm scared because I love you!" he exclaims. You choke on your tears.
"I love you, too. Maybe one day we can work. But for now, I think we need to just be friends." He shakes his head, tears finally falling. Your heart breaks into more pieces at his pained expression.
"I'm sorry," he cries. You bite your lip.
"I'm sorry, too." You wipe your eyes and turn to walk up to your dormitory. You glance back at Ron. He's standing there, looking into the fire the same way you were at the beginning of the conversation.
You turn back around and walk up the stairs, away from the love of your life.

All the messed up fights
And slamming doors
Magnifying all our flaws
And I wonder why
Wonder what for
Why we keep coming back for more?
