Ever since Peggy, Steve Rogers was scared to fall in love. He was worried that he would leave behind said lover, destroying not only his lover, but him as well. But you snuck your way into his heart and there you stayed.
You made sure that he knew that the world doesn't rest on his shoulders, reminding him that he has a team to help him carry it. But the day you were killed trying to help him save Bucky is a day that repeats over and over in his brain.
The way you smiled at him because he cracked a joke in the midst of a battle on the highway, the way your smile fell as the bullet pierced your abdomen, the way you fell to the ground before Steve could catch you.
The light fading from your eyes as you died in his arms.
Now he was nothing but the shell of the man who brought life to the Avengers. He was no longer the co-leader with Tony, the older brother for Wanda, the best friend for Natasha.
