March 2024

At eighteen, you're young for an assistant manger. You know this, but it doesn't stop you from doing your job. Your co-workers love you, and your manager sees you as his workplace daughter. Sometimes, though, the customers aren't so nice. They want someone older to help them and, in most cases, they want a guy. They think that because you're a girl, you know nothing about tools and hardware.

"(Y/N)," your manager, Reese, calls as you finish stocking pain primers.

"What's up?" you ask as he approaches.

"Remember that new hire I was telling you about?" he asks. You nod. "Do you mind if he shadows you?" You stand and dust off your jeans.

"I don't mind. When's he coming in?"

"He should be here in a few minutes." Reese looks down at the paint primer shelf, shaking his head lightly.

"What?"

"You and your organization skills. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"Probably have a store that looks like it was stocked by teen boys," you grin. Reese chuckles, and you follow him to his office. A few minutes later, a figure hovers in the doorway.

"Ah, Peter, glad you could make it," Reese says, standing. You look up, and you try not to let your surprise show on your face. Peter's eyes meet yours, and a surprised but dorky smile takes over his features.

"Hi, Mr. Bowen," Peter says, shaking Reese's hand.

"No need for formalities. Call me Reese. This here is my assistant manager, (Y/N). You'll be shadowing her today if you're cool with that."

"Uh, yeah. Perfectly fine," Peter smiles.

"Great. She'll show you the ropes." Reese turns to you, a sly smile on his face. "Get me if you need me. Remember to actually take a lunch break today."

"Yeah, yeah," you dismiss, walking out of Reese's office. Peter follows after you, looking around the store.

"So, this is where you work?" Peter asks as he catches up to you. You give him an odd look.

"Obviously. I didn't know you were searching for a job."

"Yeah, well, my Aunt May said I should do something other than homework when I get back from school, so she figured a job might work. Save up for college and everything."

"Ah, right. College. Been trying not to think about that."

"It's all I can think about," Peter admits. You risk a side glance at him, trying to ignore how attractive he actually is. You've really only seen him in passing and that one time you were paired up during class for a chemistry project. Peter runs with the smart kids. You, on the other hand, run with the theatre group. That's not to say you're aren't smart, your talents just lie in the performing arts rather than robotics and equations.
