You're getting increasingly tired of sitting there looking pretty.
Being princess of the country of Hogwarts was more difficult than you'd think. Your father, King Albus Dumbledore, forbade you from leaving the castle walls without an escort.
But, today, you're feeling devious.
You slip on the cloak over the commoner dress you borrowed from your head handmaiden, Andromeda.
"You promise to keep this a secret, yes?" you ask for the umpteenth time.
"Yes, My Lady, I promise. You are very sick. So sick you cannot leave bed, and the healer advised against anyone entering your room, lest they catch the same sickness you have been unfortunately gifted," she winks. You laugh, squeezing her hand.
"Thank you, Andromeda. I owe you one."
"It is my pleasure," she curtsies. You slip the hood over your head, and sneak out of your room. Keeping your head down, you manage to slip past the guards. Once outside, you struggle to avoid breaking into a run. You walk for a few miles, finally reaching the festival.
Every summer, the village holds a Summer Solstice, something you'd always wanted to go to but were not allowed. Once you reach the square where music is playing, you lower your hood. Luckily for you, the villagers rarely see you, so most are unaware of what you look like.
But, for those who do, you're nearly unrecognizable. Your (h/c) hair is tied back in a messy braid, your plain dress and tattered shoes a far cry from your usual elegant appearance.
"Here!" an unknown person exclaims. You look down at a little girl tugging at your dress. She hands you a handmade flower crown. You beam, taking it gently.
"Thank you so much." You place it on your head. "How do I look?" You pose jokingly. The child giggles.
"As beautiful as a princess!" Your heart soars, for the girl reminds you of your younger sister, Lily. She looks at the fountain that children are dancing around. "Come dance with me!" She grabs your hand and pulls you to the circle. You lock hands with another child, laughing as you all skip circles around the fountain. People have gathered around to clap to the beat of the music, most smiling at their children.
Once the song is over, the children start splashing each other with the fountain water. The little girl who gave you the flower crown, splashes you, effectively pulling you into the playful battle.
A little while later, you're absolutely soaked, but in the highest spirits you've been in a long time.
That is, until you see your head knight strolling through the crowd, making sure everyone is safe and nothing is getting out of hand. You look at the ground, hoping that your disguise could fool the smartest man in the country.
"You look freezing," the familiar voice says. You keep your head down, pretending to fix your dress. After an awkward silence, you realize he is talking to you.
"I am fine, Sir Knight. The sun is drying me quickly," you inform, hoping that the sound of your voice goes over his head.
"Still, I think this is a little too tattered for a princess such as yourself." Your head shoots up and you meet the humorous brown eyes of Sirius Black
"I- I just wanted- please do not tell anyone," you plead pathetically. Sirius chuckles.
"I will not. You look more carefree than I have seen you in a long time," he comments. The music starts back up, and he looks toward the band. "Care to dance?" He holds out his hand, and it takes you a moment to digest the fact that he's not going to turn you in.
"Just to clarify, you are keeping my secret?" you ask meekly. His teasing grin turns into a genuine smile.
"Yes, My Lady. This stays between us." At his words, you take his hand, your smile returning. You start a fun, fast paced dance that you wish were allowed at the balls your father organized. Instead, you are forced to waltz with 'potential suitors.' You laugh as Sirius stumbles slightly, and Sirius beams.
As the song draws to a close, you slow, his hands still on your waist and yours around his shoulders. The sound of the festival fades, and you're struck by how handsome he truly is.
You'd always found him attractive, but you'd never been able to get close enough to really look at him, despite him being the one in charge of yours and Lily's protection. After a brief moment, he pulls away, clearing his throat.
"Forgive me, Your Highness. I did not mean to overstep." You furrow your eyebrows.
"Overstep? Sir Knight, you did not overstep. In fact, I believe you still have a step to take." His eyes meet yours, widening at the flirtatious look in them. Without another moment wasted, he connects your lips. You smile into the kiss, wrapping your arm around his neck. He lifts you off the ground a little, keeping a tight grip on your waist.
When the need for air becomes unavoidable, he sets you down, grinning like a madman.
"I have waited years to do that," he mumbles, his forehead resting against yours.
"I wish you had done it sooner," you tease. He laughs breathlessly, blessing you with another light kiss. Your elation fades as reality sets in.
"What is it?" Sirius asks, sensing your change in mood.
"This cannot leave this village, as much as I want it to follow me everywhere," you whisper sadly. Sirius cups your cheek and kisses your nose.
"We will make it work. I will not let you slip away that easily."
"How?" you question. Sirius is quiet for a moment.
"We will worry about that later. For now, let us enjoy each other and the joy this day brings."
And that's exactly what you do.
