For days, doubt has been running through your mind. You can't sleep, you can't eat. You don't want to break up with Peter, but if it means keeping him safe, what choice do you have?
"Peter? We need to talk." Peter looks up from his desk, already looking concerned.
"What's wrong?"
"How could you tell?"
"You haven't been yourself lately. You've been reading the same page for the past ten minutes." You close the book and set it aside.
"I think we should break up." Peter's eyes widen and he stands, making his way to you. You scoot to the edge of the bed.
"Did I do something? Have I not been giving you enough attention? Please, tell me. I'll fix it." Tears spring to your eyes as you shake your head.
"It's not you," you whisper, biting your lip. He sits back.
"Really? It's not you, it's me? That line?" You stand, quickly gathering your stuff into your bag.
"It's the truth. I'm sorry. I wish— I wish things could be different. But they can't. I'm sorry." Peter stops you, turning you around. He takes your face in his hands, forcing you to look at him.
"Tell me the real reason, (Y/N)." You bite your lip. You was really hoping you could avoid pulling the most bullshitted lie straight out of your ass.
It's for his own good.
"I don't love you." You watch in agony as his heart breaks in time with yours. You pull his hands away from your face gently. He steps back slightly, his face blank. "I'm sorry."
And you leave.

It's been four months since you broke up with Peter. You avoid each other like the plague at school, even refusing to do any group projects together. You have no friends since the only friends you had were Peter, MJ, and Ned. After you broke up with Peter, it's like you broke up with MJ and Ned as well. So now, all you do is attend school, fail the classes, go home, and be a wannabe hero at night.
It's kinda funny that the reason you had to break up with Peter was because you're a masked vigilante.
The difference between Cat Woman— your subtle inspiration— and you is that you don't team up with a man dressed as a bat. You don't even team up with the other man who shoots webs out of his wrists. You don't plan on ever doing so, either. He takes care of the big events like major bank robberies and such while you subtly dwindle the amount of muggings and petty theft in the city.
