THREE YEARS OLD

Kongpob sighed as he stepped out of the shower, today was going to be both a tough day and rewarding day. It will be tough cause he is sending Kyla Joy off to preschool and rewarding because he will finally be able to get some work done without having to watch a three-year-old so she doesn't get into trouble. It would be hard for both Kong and Arthit to let her go, more Kong since Arthit wasn't going to be there since he had to work. She was only going for a few hours, but it felt longer than that.

Kyla Joy had grown this last year from a one-year-old who loved her toys and her parents and had a wild personality into a three-year-old who is a shy, thoughtful, kind, funny and artistic. She still looked like a mixture of her parents except her hair was a little lighter than her parents and a little longer so it was touching her shoulders. Kyla Joy was definitely not someone who liked strangers and it was going to be a fight to leave her at preschool, but she needed to go so that she could be ready for kindergarten and get used to being around kids her own age. Kong's cellphone rang as he finished getting dressed. He picked it up to see Arthit's name flashing, he was probably calling to remind Kong to take pictures of Kyla Joy's first day of preschool outfit. Kong hit answer before putting it up to his ear.

"Aren't you supposed to be working?" Kong asked.

"I had to use the restroom so I thought I'd call and see if she is up yet." Arthit said as the door to the bedroom opened and in walked a tired looking KJ.

"She just walked in, hold on and I will put it on speaker so you can say hello." Kong said before bringing the phone down and hitting the speaker button as Kyla Joy made her way to him. He knelt down in front of her as she approached.

"She can hear you" he said.

"Hey baby girl, did you sleep well?" Arthit asked

"Yeah" she said sleepily.

"That's good, I have to go but I just wanted to wish you luck on your first day of preschool. I love you, Kyla Joy."

"Love you Papa" she said.

"Kongpob, don't forget-"

"I won't forget to send you a picture of her outfit now go back to work." Kong said.

"Love you" he said.

"Love you too"

"Bye bye Papa"

"Bye bye KJ" Arthit said before hanging up.

"Let's get you some breakfast before getting you dressed for school." Kong said before picking her up.

"I don't wanna go" she whined.

"Kyla Joy, we talked about this, you have to go to preschool." He said. Kyla Joy started to cry as they made their way downstairs.

"I don't want to go" she cried.

"It will only be for a little while then Daddy will pick you up."

"I want to stay with you."

"Think of all the friends you are going to make while you are at preschool." He said as he set her in her booster seat and buckled her in.

"I don't want to go." She cried.

"I hear you but both Papa and Daddy went to preschool when we were your age and we got through it."

"You and Papa are old!!" She yelled.

"Ouch that's not nice, your dad and I are not old we are in our twenties."

"It's true" she said. Kongpob shook his head in disbelief, today was already starting to be one of those days.

Kong pulled up to the preschool an hour and a half later, Kyla Joy was still upset about having to go to preschool and it was like World War 3 trying to get her dressed and her hair done. She threw the biggest fit and refused to let Kong help her get dressed. He had to bribe her with fruit snacks after ten minutes of arguing with her and it took another bag of fruit snacks to get her to let him put her hair in pigtails, even getting her in the car was a pain. He ended up telling her that if she didn't stop struggling there would be no second bedtime story, she stopped struggling but complained the rest of the way.

Kong got out and went around the car to get Kyla Joy out. She had the angriest look on her face when he got her out and she was totally quiet. He walked with Kyla Joy in his arms towards the building and as they made it to the door Kyla Joy said something that melted his heart.

"Promise that I will come home?" She said.

"I promise, when you are done we will go out and get ice cream." He said making Kyla Joy smile. They entered the building and were greeted by a woman who welcomed them, Kong set Kyla Joy on the ground before kneeling in front of her. He took out his phone and took a quick picture for Arthit before putting it away.

"I love you" he said

"I love you, Daddy"

"This nice lady is going to take you where all the other kids are and then at the end of day, I will be right here to pick you up."

"Okay" she said.

"Give me a kiss goodbye" Kyla Joy leaned in and kiss him before he stood up. The teacher held out her hand for Kyla Joy who hesitantly took it, Kong watched as his whole world was led away and his heart almost broke. This was the first time since she was born that he had been away from her for more than an hour. He took a deep breath to calm his emotions and told himself that he would see her again before turning and leaving. The next few hours were both nice and hellish for Kong without Kyla Joy, he missed her but he knew she needed to be around kids her own age and she needed to learn more so she would be prepared for kindergarten. Arthit wasn't doing any better, he had come home from work since he had worked himself up so much that he made himself sick. He was worried that the little kids would pick on KJ for having two dads.

When it was finally time for them to pick up Kyla Joy, they were already waiting in the lobby with all the other parents. They got a few looks but they didn't care, their eyes were focused on the kids that were coming around the corner. They watched the kids find their parents and when they finally saw Kyla Joy they smiled. Kyla Joy smiled when she caught sight of her parents and ran through the crowd to get to them. Arthit picked her up when she got to them and kissed her cheek.

"Did you have fun?" Arthit asked.

"Yeah, can we get ice cream now?" She asked.

"Yes we can" Kong chuckled.
