"The Government of Brazil refuses to take responsibility for-"

"What a dimwit," I mutter and take a bite out of my proudly-self-made sandwich. I chew the sandwich inside my mouth and let the taste linger for a while. This is life.

Unfortunately, my appreciation for life was short-lived.

"Kiara Olive Leery-White!" I hear my name just as the tv screen turns black.

"Hey!" I complain, getting a bit annoyed for the interruption. But that's until I turn around and see who's standing behind me. Mom is standing behind me with the remote in one hand. Her nostrils flare as she glares down at me.

"You young lady," she points a finger at me. "Do you have any idea what time it is?" I angle my head to look at the grandfather clock behind her. It's seven twenty, less than an hour left before school.

Oh, school, right. It almost slipped my mind.

My dearest mother, Agnes Leery, is usually a super cool mom. She doesn't put her nose in her daughters' business. As a Professor of State University, she never even pressured us about our school. But there are a few things she can't tolerate. And one of them is tardiness, which I, her eldest daughter, is doing more than often these days.

I raise a hand in the air in defense before walking back to the kitchen. I find my sister and dad halfway through their breakfast there.

My sister, Kat, sticks her tongue out when she sees me entering the kitchen with a frown on my face. I wanted to smack her, but I can't afford witnesses. So I flip her the finger and hop on a stool with a huff.

Dad doesn't notice the exchange between us and continues reading the morning paper while eating his breakfast. He's a surgeon in City Hospital and is very popular in his profession. The reason we were able to afford a house on this street.

It's not much compared to the mansions a few streets down, but mom made sure it looks elegant and sophisticated. My parents installed a pool in the backyard. Though it doesn't come much use to me since I can't swim, unlike my sister, who won silver in the National Junior Olympics last year.

Grisbee, my white Persian munchkin meows eagerly from the floor when she sees me. I don't know what was going on in my nine-year-old mind when I named her Grisbee.

She comes to my feet and rubs her furry cheeks against my leg so that I will pet her.

"Not now girl," I tell her. "I've to go to school."

Grisbee's ears flatten. She turns her back to me and continues eating her cat-food. I swear this cat's ego is bigger than Russia.

Mom walks into the kitchen and goes over to the stove to make her breakfast. The moment she steps into the kitchen, she starts complaining about me to dad.

As the wise person I am, I don't try to defend myself. Not that I have that right anymore, not after what I have done all morning.

But to my defense, this all happened because today is the first day of school after the long summer. But Katherine, my younger sister-Kat for short-doesn't agree with me.

Today is her first day of high school and she can't wait to go. She even woke up before six and spent half an hour trying to wake me up. Me- who can't wait for the week to finish already.
