"Kai... Kai, wake up, please," the King said, gently shaking his shoulder.
Kai awakened and sat up in his bed. For a moment, he was surprised that he was able to do this with such vigor, for he had been awfully sick for quite some time. Then he realized that he had no muscle aches, he wasn't coughing, and that his fever was gone.
"Are you feeling any better, my boy?" he asked.
He slowly nodded. "Yes your highness, I am."
"Good," the king said with a smile. "I need you to go to my daughter's room. She came in quite distraught saying that she wanted to cancel the wedding. Can you please talk to her?"
Kai was astounded at hearing this. Speranza, although young, was very wise. She would never go back on something as serious as this. Could this explain why he was no longer sick? After all, the only reason why vampires get sick like this is when they're the victim of unrequited feelings from their mate... but still, she would never let her feelings deter her from something so important.
"Alright, I will go talk to her," he said, rising up from his bed. He trekked through the castle and arrived at her door. Slowly, he turned the knob and walked in to see her sprawled out on her bed, weeping softly. The sight was enough to physically make his heart ache.
"Speranza," he whispered, placing a hand on her shoulder. The action startled her, and her head popped up. Then, she looked up and saw who it was.
"Kai," she breathed endearingly, and threw herself onto him. "It's been so long. I am so happy to see you again."
"I am happy to see you too," he said, "but I'm not happy that I'm seeing you like this... what is wrong darling?" He sat down on her bed and pulled her down with him.
Speranza tried her best to talk through her sobs. "Leoh... was late to rehearsal... and I went to look for him... and he was with his parents... and all along... it was just a plan to use... and kill me for the pure... half to use for their own evil plans..." She started crying even harder after explaining.
"That BASTARD!" Kai snarled. "I had a feeling that he and those crooks only wanted to use you. Shame on them!"
"Do you... know them?" Speranza asked. She suspected this from how he reacted so angrily.
He sighed before answering. "Yes, I do."
"...How...?"
"...Leoh is my younger half brother. His mother, the vampire queen, killed my mother when I was young. It was such a difficult time of mourning for us, and she was able to brainwash my father, the vampire king, into loving her. She was such a vile woman, constantly abusing and berating me, while Leoh just stood idly by, watching it all happen. The day came when I just had enough, so I left and became a servant here."
"Oh Kai... that is so awful, I'm so sorry... and like and idiot I trusted such evil people..."
"Do not dare speak of yourself like that," he scolded, hugging her body close and wiping away a tear. "You have a young heart that longs to love, you are not the one to blame for that. They are the guilty ones because they toyed with something pure and beautiful."
Speranza didn't speak, she just stayed in his arms, a light blush on her cheeks. She loved it when Kai spoke to her like this; he didn't ever just see her as the princess, he saw her for her. A young girl who had too much thrust onto her shoulders. He was the only one who held her close, who understood that, in the end, she was still a person with feelings and hopes and dreams.
Speranza suddenly realized something about what he just told her about his past with the vampire family...
"Kai...?" she spoke.
"Hmm?"
"You said that the vampire king is your father," she pulled herself out of his arms and faced him, "so that must mean... that you are..."
"...Yes princess— half human, half vampire," he finished her sentence calmly, although he was panicking on the inside. People like him were always shunned and treated as outcasts... she wouldn't feel the same way, would she?
She just stared at him, and he refused to make eye contact. Then, looking down at her lap, she quietly murmurs, "huh, interesting. Now I see how he stayed so handsome and youthful looking after all these years."
His cheeks turned a light shade of pink and he rubbed the back of neck sheepishly. "My my, thank you Speranza! I am greatly flattered!"
She whipped her head up and stared at him with wide eyes. "D-did you just read my mind?"
He raised an eyebrow. "No... you just said that out loud..."
Speranza was embarrassed. "Oh... I did not mean to... I'm sorry."
"Haha, you're fine my love. And dare I say, that you're quite the catch yourself~" he said, brushing a curl out of her face and kissing her forehead. The gesture was enough to make her melt.
Suddenly, her door opens and the king and queen burst in. "Kai? Did she ever tell you what was wrong?" the queen asked.
"It was a trap all along your highness. They were planning on using Speranza to steal the pure half for themselves," Kai explains.
"Oh no! How awful!" the queen gasped, then turning to the king, "I knew their plan was nothing but an evil scheme. You should have listened to me!!"
"I know love... I regret ever trusting those blasted liars. Now what will we do to bring peace between our peoples?" the king pondered.
Speranza and Kai both turned to each other, smirking, clearly thinking the same thing. "I can just get married off to Kai instead! Sure, he is half human, but I think it will still symbolize peace between our peoples!"
"That is a wonderful idea my dear! Kai, do want to do this?" the king asked.
Kai turned Speranza's head towards him and kissed her on her lips. "I do~"
