"Following the death of our former student Hannah Baker, we are going to be studying the topic of depression and how to identify and assist people who are struggling. She was a bright, loving girl, and she didn't have a grudge with anyone. So... can anyone tell me what depression is?" The teacher said and Y/N looked around at everyone nervously.
"Doesn't it just mean... being sad?" One student asked.
"It just means someone too sensitive to deal with whatever life throws their way." One of the jocks laughed, causing Y/N to raise her hand slowly in the air."Y/N go ahead." The teacher said and she exhaled nervously, looking around.
"It isn't just about being sad... Sometimes it's not knowing how you're feeling and it makes you wonder why you're living in a world full of people who thinks it just makes you crazy. But you know what's really crazy?" Y/N laughed weakly, looking around at everyone. "Being surrounded by people who choose to think they understand. They say they get why you're crying and broken but they fail to see the most hurt faces in a room full of people just like us lot.""The ones who are hurting are the strongest, and they're the one willing to lend people a hand, they're the ones willing to be a shoulder for people to cry on. So please." Y/N scoffed. "Be nice to everyone because words do really hit hard and you don't know who's going through it. We didn't know Hannah Baker was going through it because she felt like she couldn't reach out because she got bullied and no one could see her hurt face at that moment in time, but we do now... and now it's too late because people think depression is being sad and thinking everything is just okay!"
"But it's more serious than that, and we gotta take depression more serious than that." Y/N looked around at everyone, tears brimming her eyes. Everyone either had a blank, shocked or heartbroken look on their face, and Y/N slumped in her chair, staring at the table when the teacher spoke up.
"Miss (Y/L/N), please grab your things and wait outside the classroom I would like to speak to you."
"Fine by me." She mumbles and then grabbed her things, throwing them in the bag and waiting outside."Miss (Y/L/N) what the hell was all that about? What was that?"
"That was the truth, because I've been waiting for the right time to say this and i know, without even looking, you wouldn't have got anywhere near the bone of what depression is. You would have pussy-footed around that shit like it's a sleeping mouse. But we can't sleep on things like that, because that's why people feel like they can't speak up, and that's why they kill themselves. That's why our friends kill themselves, that's why your students kill themselves. But this school doesn't care does it? Give me one bit of proof that shows they care. And not proof like these stupid posters, romanticising Hannah Bakers death!"Y/N walked off down the hall and got called to the headmasters office over the tannoy. When the teacher walked back in the classroom, a bunch of students walked out saying things like 'she was right, I've seen the slides' etc. After the bell rang, Y/N walked out the headteachers office and down the corridor to her locker where Tony was waiting for her. "I heard about what happened in class today?"
"News travels fast huh?" She asks and Tony nods, looking towards her.
"Good on you Y/N.""Hey Y/N." Justin said and Y/N turned to face him before turning back to her locker.
"I'll leave you two to talk. Text me." Tony said and Y/N nodded before turning to Justin.
"What's up?" Y/N asked and then pushed her book hard into her locker before grabbing her bag and hoodie.
"How are you?" He asked and Y/N nodded.
"I'm better now I've had the time to get that out there."
"People need to know the reality, and you showed them it."
"I just- I don't know where it came out from." Y/N's voice cracked."Come here baby." Justin said and pulled Y/N into his arms, hugging her slightly smaller frame. He placed a light kiss on her head and hugged her until she calmed down slightly. He pulled away and cupped her face in his hands.
"Foley my man, are you coming back to mine?" Bryce called from down the corridor and he shook his head, adjusting his strap on his sports bag slightly.
"No I'm gonna go with Y/N tonight, she's feeling a bit down."Bryce looked from Justin to Y/N and nodded. "Oh yeah, right. I heard-"
"What happened. Yeah, it seems everyone has." Y/N said and Bryce fist bumped Justin and patted Y/N's shoulder supportingly.
"Hope you feel better." He said with an empathetic smile and walked off after saying goodbye."Well that was easy- he would usually beg you to go with him." Y/N said and Justin nodded, turning back to Y/N.
"Yeah well... maybe he's come to his senses and figured out all humans have a heart including himself. Come on, let's go." Justin said and closed Y/N's locker before walking out the school with him.
