It was blazing hot in Tulsa. You could see heat waves on the street. There was not a single cloud in the sky. Even being in your own house didn't block the heat.
You were craving a coke, badly. You checked the fridge and you were all out. You sighed, you desperately needed one.
There was a gas station a few blocks away, maybe you could buy one there.
You walked to the gas station. Kicking pebbles and humming a tune. You wiped the sweat off of your forehead with the back of your hand.
Man, it's like an oven! You thought.
You reached the gas station and sighed with relief. You could finally get a coke.
You spotted two, young guys there. They had uniforms with the gas station logo. They worked there. They looked like they were about your age.
One had blue eyes and gold hair. He looked like a movie star. He was fixing a car under the heat. He looked tired and busy.
Then, there was the other boy who caught your attention. He had greased up hair that curled in complicated wisps. He had a good build and a tattoo on his bicep. Even when he was covered in oil and sweat, he still managed to look seriously handsome.
He was leaning against the wall, fanning himself with his cap. He looked so cool without even trying.
You stopped staring at him as you reached the gas station, keeping your cool and pretending to not notice him.
In the corner of your eye, you caught him pausing and staring at you. You didn't look back, you only looked forward as you walked inside.
You found the ice box in front of the cash register. You looked around. The place was empty. Not a single person was there except for the two boys outside.
You started to dig into the ice box, pulling out four bottles of coke and setting it aside on the register. You stood there and waited for someone to come.
You heard the door swing open. It was the boy who stared at you as you walked inside. He walked behind the cash register.
"How may I help you, Miss?" He asked you with a smile.
"Just these, please." You said, pushing the cokes up to him.
You started to dig into your pockets. Nothing was there. You checked again frantically. You realized you forgot your wallet on your bed.
"Oh no...," You sighed, "I forgot my wallet at home. I'm so stupid, uh...sorry about that, I'll just put these back in there and go."
He shook his head.
"On the house." He said.
"Wait, what? Really?" You asked, confused.
"Really." He said. He smiled and pushed them to you.
"Oh wow, thanks so much! You're the best." You thanked him.
"You're welcome, good lookin'." He said.
You felt yourself starting to blush.
You wanted to return the favor.
"Here." You said, giving two cokes to him, "For you and your friend. You work so hard out there, you deserve a coke."
"Why, thank you." He said, taking the drinks from you.
He gave you a big, toothy grin. You couldn't help but smile too.
You guys started to talk and you realized you had a lot in common with him.
You checked the time and you realized you had to be somewhere in an hour.
"Oh, I'm sorry but I have to go somewhere later. It was nice talking to you..." You said.
"It's Steve." He said with a smile, "What's yours?"
"Y/N." You said, "Will you be here tomorrow?"
"I'm here practically everyday."
"Great." You smiled.
"Goodbye, beautiful." He said to you.
You giggled and opened the door.
You walked out the gas station with a smile on your face, not because you got your cokes, it was because you met a nice boy today.
Steve watched you disappear as you took a corner.
"Are you done flirting instead of doing work?" His friend, Sodapop, teased him.
Sodapop poked Steve's back and smirked.
"You like her, don't you." He teased.
"No, I don't." Steve denied quickly.
"Come on, Steve. I'm your best friend, I know you. I walked inside and you didn't seem to notice me. I happened to hear a bit from the conversation you were having with her. You never talked to a woman like that before. You called her beautiful and good lookin'. I saw you getting chummy with her, Steve."
Steve gave up.
"Yeah, okay. I like her, are you happy?" He said , annoyed.
"Very much so." Sodapop said as he got back to work, "You should ask her out tomorrow. I bet she'd say yes."
"Hm, maybe I will." Steve said, thinking.
He kept looking where you walked for a minute then he went back to work.
