I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling. It took a moment for me to realize that I was finally breathing pain free. I looked to the side and saw Mina was sitting playing on her phone with her feet up on my bed.
"Mina." I said getting her attention, and she turned to me.
"Hey!" She said and sat up in her chair and scooted closer to me. "How you feeling?"
"I . . . . I don't feel any different." I started to say, and I thought about it. "I thought I was going to feel sad or empty. But, I just kind of feel stiff."
"That's probably from having your ribs cage cracked open." She said and laughed. She then gave me a look, and it was a mix of happy and worried.
"What?" I asked her.
"Oh nothing." She told me and grabbed my hand. There was a knock on the door and I looked to see Mr. Aizawa and my mom. My mom came up and sat on my bed next to me, and wrapped her arm around my shoulders.
"How you feeling sweetie?" She asked me.
"I don't feel any different." I told her. "How did you feel after you had the surgery?"
"I felt really sad." She told me, and brushed my hair out of my face. "I felt like there was a giant hole in my chest, kind of like when you dig up a flower bush."
"Then why don't I feel like that?" I asked her, and she smiled at me.
"Do you want to know who I was in love with?" She asked me, changing the subject.
"Who?" I asked.
"Your father." She told me and I flinched a little. I had never met my father, and she never really said anything about him before. "I had met him in a bar a long time ago, and we ended up having a one night stand. Your mother was very-."
"Mom!" I groaned, and she laughed.
"Alright, I skip the good stuff." She said. "But I found out I was pregnant with you, and I was so excited. And I fell in love with your father. I thought we would live together and raise you together. But I couldn't find him again."
"And you got Hanahaki disease." I said. She nodded to me and took my hand.
"I did." She said and rubbed her thumb over the back of my hand. "I searched and searched for him, and I got to the three month mark with my disease. It almost killed me, and definitely almost killed you. But I got the surgery, and I felt really empty."
"What happened after that?" I asked her. She looked up at me and smiled.
"Not long after that, I had you. And the hole in my chest was filled." She told me and kissed me on my forehead. I hugged her tight and she petted my hair. "I'm just glad you didn't have to go through that." She told me and I looked up at her.
"What?" I asked her.
"I should let you rest." She told me and got off the bed. "I have to head home, but I'll come pick you up when you're done recovering."
"I'm going to go get some snacks." Mina said and they both walked towards the door.
"I thought you brought snacks with us?" I asked her, but she ignored me and followed my mom out the door and closed it behind her.
And I was left in silence with Mr. Aizawa in the corner of my room. And we were both quiet for about a minute before he walked over toward my bed.
"Hey there kiddo." He said and sat down in the chair Mina had been in.
"Hi Mr. Aizawa." I said and sat myself up a bit. "I'm sorry for scaring you."
"It's alright." He said, and he was quiet as he thought to himself. "Mina told us, who you had the disease for." He said and I felt like heart was going to beat out of my chest. It even sounded like it from the heart monitor.
"Oh god I'm sorry!" I said covered my face. "Mr. Aizawa I'm so sorry! I didn't mean for it to happen! I told you, it was a silly little thought and my brain just kind of spiraled after that!"
"It's alright calm down." He told me. And a nurse rushed into the room. "We're alright." He told her and I covered my face.
"Sweetheart I need you to calm down before I leave okay?" She asked me, and I nodded as she rubbed my back and I focused on my breathing. And for once in the past two weeks I was able to take a deep breath without being in pain.
After I calmed down and my heart rate got passed a certain point, the nurse left the room.
"Mr. Aizawa I'm sorry." I said again, now that I had calmed down. "You're not going to get in trouble are you?"
"Well I don't know at this point." He said and I put my face in my hands.
"This is why I didn't tell you, I didn't want to get you in trouble over a stupid little crush that went too far." I said and ran my fingers through my hair.
"Well I don't think it was that stupid." He said and I finally looked at him.
"How is it not?" I asked. But he didn't respond, and I put my face in my hands again.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my arm, and looked to see Mr. Aizawa was taking my hand in his. He looked down at our hands and didn't say anything.
"Mr. Aizawa?" I asked, and I was getting a weird feeling in my stomach.
"You didn't get the plant removed." He told me.
"How is that possible?" I asked him, and he looked at me.
"When they got to where the plant was supposed to be, it was gone." He told me.
"Gone?" I asked. "How was it gone? It doesn't go away unless it's removed or . . . . ." I said, but realized why it was gone. I looked down at him and he was looking at me. "Mr. Aizawa." I said and he got up from the chair. He sat down on the bed and carefully pulled me into a hug.
I breathed into his shoulder, and I didn't know what to do. Or what to say.
And neither of us said anything as he held me close to him.
