Gabby was sitting on my couch. She was sitting on my couch. Gabby was really sitting on my couch! I was trying to process everything and it seemed unbelievable. I didn't think bringing her here was a good idea, but going out with her somewhere else wouldn't have been a good idea either. She didn't seem to mind. She was sitting there looking through Netflix while I was getting her something to drink. She was still tapping her fingers on her knees which I realized it's something she did when she was nervous.
"You make me nervous." she had said to me on the ride over. I wanted to ask her why but I didn't want to push, so I told her the truth and she blushed after I told her I felt the same way.
"What about something scary?" she called from the living room. I grabbed two cokes and sat next to her. She smiled and grabbed one.
"Sure." I said. I hated scary movies, but she was the guest so what was I going to do? Say no?
"I'm sorry, would you mind if I ordered some Pizza or something?" she asked, I heard her stomach grumble which made me laugh and her look away in embarrassment.
"I got it. What do you want?"
"Chicken and bacon definitely." she said, I nodded in approval and ordered it on my phone. 20 minutes into the movie and It wasn't so bad. Gabby was so into it but then sometimes I'd catch her glancing at me to see if I laughed on the parts she thought were funny, which they were. Every time I laughed she'd smile to herself and look back at the TV.
"Pizza Delivery!" I heard from outside as I got up to get our food. I walked back in and she clapped her hands in excitement as she grabbed a slice and took a big bite.
"Oh my god, thank you so much." she said, closing her eyes and I laughed.
"Are you thanking me or God?" I joked grabbing a slice
"Both of you." she said looking at me and I busted out laughing at the pizza sauce on the side of her lip. She licked her lip in an attempt to grab it but miserably failed. After her third try, I stopped laughing and leaned over to her. I gently wiped it off her face with my thumb. I was so close to her face I thought she'd hear how loud my heart was beating. She looked at me and neither one of us moved. I don't know who was leaning towards whom but for some reason I was terrified of kissing her. Everything in my body wanted to just feel her lips against mine as if her being was pulling me to her. I suddenly backed away and sat back. I grabbed another slice and looked at the TV. she too was back to the movie. Neither one of us addressed what happened and I felt relieved.
Somehow we ended up really close to each other on the couch and by now I was regretting agreeing to the movie. I yelled when something unexpected happen and fuck it but I was scared. I kept hiding behind her and she was laughing at me the entire time. At one point she grabbed my hand and held it for comfort. When the movie ended I practically jumped and changed it to a Spongebob episode. She was sitting there laughing and the sound was magical. She had the kind of laugh that was contagious. The kind that brings a smile to your face when you hear it.
"It wasn't even that bad." she said referring to the movie.
"Right." I said sitting down trying to appear less scared than I was, but she saw right through me.
"You were so terrified. It was hilarious." she said after she was done laughing, my phone started ringing and I looked at it and rejected the call already knowing it was Roberts. Gabby must've noticed my mood change because she sat down and didn't say anything.
'I'm sorry about that." I said. I felt the need to apologize.
"It's okay, may I ask you something?" she asked shyly. I nodded.
"How long have you been married?" she asked
"Five years now." I said looking at my wedding ring. She nodded and didn't say anything else but I noticed all the humor and happiness left her face.
"Congratulations." she said dryly.
"There's nothing to congratulate, trust me" I said, wanting to change the subject. I excused myself and went to the bathroom. As soon as I got there I took off the ring and went back to the living room. She looked at me and her eyes traveled to where the ring used to be.
"It gets better you know." she said.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"You're smart. You're kind. You're brilliant. You're probably the most beautiful woman I've ever met in my whole life Mrs. Garcia. I know for a fact whatever it is you're dealing with will soon come to an end." she said seriously.
"Outside of school you can call me Reagan." I smiled at her. "There's no need to feel so old in here." I laughed and smiled.
"Reagan." she said to herself and smiled. I looked at the time and noticed it was getting really late and I was getting a little tired.
"It's time for me to go huh." she said standing up.
"Your friend still hasn't texted you back. Why don't you make yourself comfortable, it's two in the morning. I'll pull out the couch for you and you can get comfy. If she shows up by all means feel free to go, but I'd feel better knowing that you're here safely, if anything I can just drop you off in the morning, what time is your first class?" I asked her.
"Not until 12." she said.
"Perfect, we can sleep in." I laughed and got up to find her some pillows and blankets
