"So wait, is this a date?" Luke asked, entirely straight-faced as I was picking out something to wear for Ruthy and I's meeting. I rolled my eyes at the comment.
"It's not a date." Luke laughed.
"Well, then why are you so nervous? You've never been like that, not even when you first met Kirsten," she pointed out. I turned to her, probably red in the face.
"Look, I don't know. She's always been one of my best friends. But now that I think about things, she's always been there when I needed her, always made me laugh when I'm down, made me realize the right things to do....." I trailed off when my Gran came into the room.
"I always liked you and Kirsten together, son, even after the whole Tony thing, my opinion of Kirsten didn't change. But my opinion on the relationship did," she told me as she sat down on my bed. I leaned against the wall, tilting my head to the side in confusion.
"How so?" I asked.
"Well. Some people are meant to cross paths and connect, and there's no doubt that you and Kirsten were meant to be together. But I don't think you were meant for each other," she explained. I shrugged; maybe she was right.
"I loooove, Ruthy!" Ozzy squealed.
"You guys always had a great connection, whether neither of you saw it or not. Everyone else did," Luke shrugged casually when I gave him an odd look.
"I'm pretty sure even Kirsten saw it." I tried to shake things off and get ready.
"Come on, Lukey. Leave the boy to get ready," Gran winked, and they all left.
"Elijah!" I punched my brother after he jumped out from behind my bathroom door. His eyes were creased, and he was holding his stomach as he laughed,
"Aw man, how I've missed messing with you," he grinned and leaned against the wall.
"Whatever," I mumbled, looking in the mirror, attempting to fix my hair.
"Do I look okay?" I raised an eyebrow at E, and he just shrugged.
"Ruthy will like you for you. I mean, it sounds like she already saw how great you were even when you guys were just friends," he suggested, scratching his stubble. I nodded and smiled.
"She's always stood by me."
"I know. So are you going to let me meet her? Where are you guys even meeting?" He asked, glancing down at his watch.
"It's three already. We're just gonna go for dinner. I'm sure you'll meet her at some point," I laughed and grabbed the black blazer that I had paired with the shirt I'm wearing. I sprayed some aftershave over myself and walked down the stairs with my brother.
"Son, you look lovely," Gran smiled and came over and grabbed my cheeks, cooing over me. I grinned and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"See you tonight." I smiled at Luka and Ozzy, sending my older brother a wink. I'm glad that he's gonna be joining us back in Auckland.
